Maya is one of the two main protagonists of the 1984 mecha anime series Chō Kōsoku Galvion. He is a convict who, along with his partner Mu, is recruited by billionaire Rei Midoriyama to pilot the transforming mecha Galvion for her secret organization Circus, in exchange for having years reduced from his prison sentence and eventually earning complete freedom. Maya is characterized as sharp-witted, pragmatic, and dry-humored, often serving as the more level-headed and sarcastic counterpart to Mu’s impulsive and hot-headed nature. He frequently belittles Mu’s optimism and tends to approach missions with a cynical, no-nonsense attitude. Despite his snarky exterior, Maya is a capable driver and fighter, skilled in handling the Circus-1 vehicle and its robot form. His primary motivation is to gain enough points through successful missions to secure his release, though over the course of the series he develops a sense of duty and camaraderie with the other Circus members. His key relationships include his partnership with Mu, with whom he shares a bickering but loyal bond; his romantic interest in Michiko, a character he is fated to marry according to the series’ planned conclusion; and his working relationship with Rei Midoriyama and other Circus allies such as Terry and Remi. Throughout the abbreviated run of the series, Maya grows from a reluctant criminal fighting only for personal freedom into a more invested member of the team, though his character development was cut short by the show’s cancellation. In terms of abilities, Maya is an expert driver and pilot, able to handle high-speed vehicle combat and operate the Galvion in its multiple forms, using its jump-kick and later handgun and shield in battle. The planned continuation of the story would have seen him marry Michiko after the final conflict.
