Description
Knopp, formally known as Gloria Knopp, is a human antagonist in the 1988 anime series Topo Gigio. She is an elderly, wealthy woman who serves as the primary human obstacle in the series. Her background is that of a privileged landlord and property owner in the coastal town of Catalina, where the story takes place. She owns the apartment building where the young girl Gina and her mother live, along with a significant portion of the town's real estate. Her personality is defined by cynicism, irritability, and greed. She is motivated almost entirely by money and property development, frequently devising plans to demolish her existing buildings for redevelopment projects, which puts her into direct conflict with the main characters. In the story, she functions as the human-level source of antagonism, creating the central conflicts that force Topo Gigio and the other mice to intervene. Her key relationships include her ownership of Megalo, a large, malicious black cat who acts as her enforcer and the primary animal antagonist of the series, working against the mice on her behalf. She also has an adversarial landlord-tenant relationship with Gina and her mother, often threatening their home. While primarily a villain, the series provides glimpses of her development, revealing that she is a deeply lonely woman, which prevents her from being a purely one-dimensional character and adds a layer of subtle tragedy to her harsh nature. Her notable abilities are entirely non-physical, stemming from her financial wealth, social standing, and legal ownership of the properties she uses to exert power over the lives of others.
