Concetta resides in Italy with her husband and sons, Marco and Tonio. Struggling against economic hardship, she accepts a job in Argentina to earn money for one son's medical treatment. She departs for Argentina, labors as a seamstress, and sends earnings home.

After a time, her letters to Italy cease abruptly. Growing concerned, her younger son Marco sets out alone for Argentina to find her.

During her hospital recovery, consumed by worry for her family in Italy, she remained unaware they knew nothing of her plight.
