Description
Guzura is the central character of the comedy anime series in which he appears. His existence begins in a spectacular fashion, hatching from a large egg that is propelled to the surface by an explosive eruption of Mount Bikkura. Because this volcano is located on another planet, Guzura is essentially an alien being, though this aspect of his origin is less important than his subsequent adventures in the human world.
In terms of physical appearance, Guzura resembles a small, friendly dinosaur or rhinoceros. He is typically depicted with a redwood-colored hide, though some of his earliest manga appearances showed him as blue. He has a single horn on his nose, a long and powerful tail, two noticeable fangs, and a single black eye. His design is completed by his signature clothing items: a little blue cap and a small tie, giving him a somewhat domesticated and comical look.
Guzura’s personality is defined by his innocence and friendliness. He is devoid of any evil or malicious intent, approaching the world with the genuine curiosity and bewilderment of a young child. Everything he encounters in human society is strange and wonderful to him, leading to constant puzzlement and surprise. His behavior is marked by a childlike honesty, which means he cannot keep a secret for long nor maintain a lie. He has a few prominent quirks, including a tremendous appetite, a tendency to sleep a great deal, and a significant fear of syringes. When he finds himself in trouble or feels threatened, he has a habit of saying his own name in a trembling voice: Hey, I am Guzura.
The character is driven by simple, immediate motivations rather than grand ambitions. He is largely concerned with exploring his surroundings, satisfying his hunger, and helping his friends, even though his efforts often backfire spectacularly. A deeper, more personal motivation emerges when he goes on a quest to find his biological family, a journey that does not lead him to his parents but instead results in him finding and befriending another creature like himself, a female monster named Chalala.
In the story, Guzura’s primary role is that of a chaotic but lovable force who disrupts the everyday lives of the people around him. He is taken in by a human family, the Nuketas, after appearing near their home. The family consists of the easily irritated office worker father, Mr. Nuketa; his calm wife; their nerdy son, Bonta; and their daughter, Susuko. Bonta and Susuko become Guzura’s first and closest human friends. The two children genuinely care for him, and Guzura constantly tries to assist them with their problems, although his clumsy and unconventional methods typically make situations worse rather than better.
His key relationships form the core of the narrative. His friendship with Bonta and Susuko is the anchor of his life in the human world. Later, his quest for his origins leads him to a distant island where he finds Chalala, a little female monster. He brings her back to the Nuketa household, where they must keep her hidden from the parents. Chalala’s personality contrasts with Guzura’s; she is often portrayed as more sensible and frequently scolds him for his laziness and clumsiness. Despite this friction, a deep and lasting bond forms between them. In a future vision presented in one episode, their relationship culminates in marriage, and they are shown to have twelve sons.
Throughout the series, Guzura does not undergo a dramatic transformation but develops primarily through the deepening of his relationships, particularly with Chalala. He remains fundamentally innocent, but his experiences in the human world and his growing attachments teach him about companionship and responsibility, however clumsily he may apply those lessons.
Guzura possesses several notable abilities that often drive the plot. His most unique power is the ability to eat metal and, from it, create various mechanical devices. He can also breathe fire from his mouth and use his strong tail to jump to impressive heights, giving him a range of fantastical but comedic skills. Despite these powers, he is often presented as a coward who would rather run away from a threat than confront it, especially if that threat comes in the form of a doctor’s syringe.
