Description
Dr. Hiroshi Amano is the elderly, eccentric patriarch of the Amano family and the director of the Amano Peace Science Laboratory. He is the grandfather of Kenta and Haruka Amano, with whom he lives, as their parents are working abroad. A scientist of considerable genius, one source describes his age as 65, which would make him a member of the generation born around 1945 within the series' futuristic 2010 setting.

In terms of personality, Dr. Amano is a quintessential absent-minded professor, often portrayed as a "mad scientist" in the most benevolent sense of the term. While his intentions are always noble and geared toward peace, his behavior is wildly eccentric and his experiments frequently malfunction, causing chaos in his neighborhood and leading to public ridicule. He is known for his zany theories and a tendency to become overly emotional, crying in frustration when his work hits a snag and then preening with pride upon its completion. Although he often seems scatterbrained and goofs off, this outward demeanor belies his true competence and the vital role he plays in protecting the Earth.

Dr. Amano's primary motivation is the use of his scientific talents for the betterment of the world. This altruistic drive was solidified by the death of his wife, Yuri Amano, after which he dedicated himself fully to creating inventions that would serve peace. He foresaw that negative energy would one day coalesce into a threat against the planet, and he worked tirelessly to prepare for that eventuality. This foresight led to his greatest creations: the android body that would be inhabited by the space police commander Fighbird (who takes the human alias Yutaro Katori), the Fire Jet, the Fire Shuttle, and the vehicles for the Baron Team. His role in the story is that of the mission control and chief engineer for the Space Police Force. His laboratory serves as their base of operations, where he provides them with shelter, guidance on Earth's customs, and a steady stream of gadgets and support vehicles to combat the forces of the evil Emperor Draias and his ally, the villainous Dr. Jango.

A number of key relationships define Dr. Amano. He acts as a surrogate parent and mentor to his grandchildren, Kenta and Haruka, who often serve as the voice of reason and are quick to scold him when his antics go too far. He has a professional and collaborative relationship with Dr. Yoshiko Kunieda, whose ambulance serves as the host for the Space Police unit Guard Rescue. For much of the early series, he is hounded by Inspector Satsuda, a police officer who suspects him of being involved in a major bank robbery and is a "common foe" due to his disruptive experiments. Satsuda's suspicions are eventually proven to be a misunderstanding, and they later become reluctant allies. The most significant relationship is his rivalry with Dr. Jango, a former colleague and friend who stole Amano's research data and inventions. While Amano uses his genius for protection, Jango uses his for destruction, making them perfect ideological and professional opposites.

While Dr. Amano does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation, his creations and their capabilities evolve throughout the series in response to escalating threats. He is consistently surprised when the Space Police forces unlock new abilities, such as the combination sequences that form giant robots, which he claims he never programmed into their machines. His laboratory also provides a second chance for minor characters, such as the reformed thieves Ippei and Goro, who join his rescue team.

Dr. Amano's notable abilities lie almost entirely in his scientific genius. He is a prolific inventor capable of creating highly advanced and seemingly impossible technology. Among his most notable creations are the Miracle Water, a nutrient-rich substance; a liquid that can purify polluted seas; and devices that can neutralize enemy weapons or create artificial rain. His inventions are often critical to saving the day, rescuing the Space Police from seemingly hopeless situations. However, his genius is tempered by incredible clumsiness and a lack of foresight for practical, everyday applications, with many of his creations having bizarre or unintended side effects. Despite his advanced age and focus on research, he is also surprisingly capable of piloting his own spacecraft and has demonstrated effective combat skills when directly confronted, as seen in his fights with Dr. Jango. His ability to fund his vast research lab and its incredible mecha, despite a reputation for not paying taxes and living in a constant state of financial deficit, also hints at a deep, inherited family wealth.
