TV-Series
Description
Katsura Tenjoin is the adopted daughter of Kaoru Yamamoto and serves as the cheerful tour guide and face of the space travel agency Yamamoto Anshin Travel, commonly known as YAT. When first introduced in the series, she is eighteen years old. Her given name, Katsura, was chosen by her adoptive mother with a deliberate reference to the tale of Princess Kaguya, as it means "laurel tree," a symbol of the moon where the princess lived, reflecting the understanding that Katsura would one day leave to return to her origins. Her family name, Tenjoin, means "house in the sky".
Katsura is not human but an alien from the destroyed planet Noah. As a young child, her family's spaceship was involved in an accident. She managed to escape with her pet, Buki, using a capsule, but the capsule was accidentally pulled into an open dimensional gateway. She was rescued by Daigo Hoshiwatari, who was in the middle of an experiment with a prototype dimensional tunnel. Following her rescue, she was taken in and raised by Kaoru Yamamoto, who came to assist Daigo. At Kaoru's request, her extraterrestrial origins were kept secret from her throughout her childhood. The founding of the YAT travel agency was partly motivated by Kaoru's desire to search for Katsura's biological parents.
Katsura is characterized by her strikingly long green hair, vibrant violet eyes, and a preference for accessories like earrings, hats, gloves, and ribbons. Her personality is one of unwavering kindness, infectious optimism, and a natural, almost naive airheadedness. She excels at lifting the spirits of those around her, acting as the emotional heart of the YAT team. Her naivety is most evident in her romantic life, as she remains completely oblivious to the feelings of her coworker, Goro Hoshiwatari, for a significant portion of the story. This dense but cheerful nature is a core part of her character. Despite her elegant appearance, she has an unexpected and dangerous hobby: martial arts.
Katsura possesses a range of supernatural abilities stemming from her Noahian physiology. Her most prominent ability is her immeasurable superhuman strength; she can easily lift objects weighing one hundred tons with a single hand. This power, which she instinctively uses in self-defense, is said to have first manifested during the spaceship crash of her childhood when she tapped into supernatural power to survive. She is also an instinctive and highly skilled martial artist. Her other paranormal talents include telepathic communication, sporadic precognitive visions which often occur while traveling through dimensional tunnels, and a unique lullaby that will put anyone who hears it to sleep on the spot. This lullaby is so potent that even a recording of her voice is effective. These abilities are all presumed to be a result of her alien heritage.
In her role at the agency, Katsura is the charming and welcoming "visage" of YAT, frequently featured in promotional materials to attract customers. Before Goro was hired, she even handled the maintenance of the company spaceship, the YAT Dove. For all her strength and skill, she has one infamous weakness: she is a terrible cook. Her meals are consistently described as inedible or even potentially lethal, leading to a crew-wide ban on her entering the kitchen.
Her key relationship is with Goro Hoshiwatari, who falls in love with her. Due to her extreme airheadedness, she does not notice his feelings for a long time, even when he confesses to her under duress. However, after receiving a clear confession in episode forty-two of the first season, she acknowledges her own feelings for him in the final episode, and the two become a couple. Her bond with her adoptive mother, Kaoru Yamamoto, is symbiotic; Kaoru's overprotectiveness fosters Katsura's childlike curiosity, while Katsura's sincere concern serves to temper Kaoru's more reckless behavior.
A major development in Katsura's story involves learning the truth about her alien origins. Once a safe route to the planet Noah is established, she temporarily leaves the Earth to reconnect with her home world, acting on the fate her adopted mother had always anticipated for her. Ultimately, her strong attachment to the YAT crew and her implied romantic feelings for Goro draw her back to the agency. During the second season, when Kaoru is kidnapped, Katsura steps up to act as the new leader of YAT in her place.
