Description
The character Ilonius, also referred to as Ionius, appears in the 1970 anime film Cleopatra, which is part of the adult-oriented Animerama series. His background is inherently tied to the film’s unique science fiction framing device. Ilonius is the ancient Egyptian identity inhabited by the soul of a man from the distant future named Jiro. In this past era, Ilonius exists as a handsome and physically strong Greek slave soldier serving in Julius Caesar's army. When the consciousnesses of Jiro and two other individuals are transported back in time to uncover a secret alien plot known as the Cleopatra Plan, Jiro finds himself in the body of this slave, but with no memory of his future life or his original mission.
Regarding personality, while Ilonius is the historical vessel, his actions are colored by the subconscious traits of his future self, Jiro. He does not possess a distinct personality separate from this influence. As a slave soldier, he is depicted as capable and resilient, surviving in the harsh environment of the Roman military hierarchy. His most defining characteristic is an anachronistic ingenuity; despite having no conscious memories of the future, Ilonius retains a latent ability to recall advanced concepts of technology. This manifests in his capacity to construct primitive hand grenades and guns using the resources available in ancient Egypt, a skill that sets him apart from the other characters in his time period.
Ilonius’s primary motivation is not self-driven, as he is unaware of his true purpose. Instead, his role in the story is to serve as an unwitting operative for the future mission. He exists to gather information about Cleopatra and the plan named after her, though he is unaware of this goal. His actions in the past, driven by his immediate circumstances and the faint echo of his future knowledge, are crucial for advancing the plot. He is placed directly in the midst of the political and military conflicts surrounding Cleopatra, Caesar, and the Roman conquest of Egypt.
The character’s key relationships are defined by his position among the Roman forces and the people around Cleopatra. Ilonius is a soldier under the command of Julius Caesar. He also becomes the object of affection for Libya, the handmaiden to Cleopatra. This relationship is significant because Libya is, in reality, the ancient body inhabited by Mary, one of the other time-traveling agents from the future. Like Ilonius and Jiro, Libya has no memory of her future self or her mission, creating an unconscious bond between the two lost souls. This connection places Ilonius in close proximity to Cleopatra's inner circle, as Libya serves the queen directly.
The development of Ilonius is less about a traditional personality arc and more about the gradual, subconscious emergence of his future self's knowledge. The central irony of his character is that he is a man out of time who can access advanced technology but cannot remember his own identity. His development is static in terms of memory or personal realization, but dynamic in terms of his impact on the past. By using his futuristic knowledge to create weapons, he inadvertently changes the technological landscape of the ancient world, fulfilling his mission in a way he does not consciously understand. His notable abilities are entirely derived from this time-displaced knowledge, as he possesses not only physical strength but also the uncanny and unexplained ability to invent and manufacture gunpowder-based weaponry in an era where they should not exist.
