Description
In the 1970 anime film Cleopatra, Kleopatra is the Queen of Egypt and the central figure of the story. She is initially presented as a vulnerable claimant to the throne, but her character is defined by immense beauty, political cunning, and a fierce determination to preserve Egyptian sovereignty. A unique element of this adaptation is that she undergoes surgery to physically transform herself into an irresistible "living weapon," enhancing her seductive power as a tool for manipulation.

Kleopatra's primary motivation is to maintain Egypt's independence by seducing and controlling the most powerful leaders of the Roman Empire. She enters into calculated romantic and political alliances with Julius Caesar and later with Marcus Antonius, using her charm to secure her position and protect her kingdom. Her role in the narrative is that of a tragic heroine caught in both a historical power struggle and a cosmic conflict involving time‑traveling agents from the future. She becomes the object of fascination for the time‑traveler Ionius, who becomes distracted from his mission by his attraction to her.

Kleopatra's personality is characterized by tragic ambition. She is shrewd and pragmatic, yet her emotional bonds with Caesar and especially with Antonius reveal a capacity for genuine passion. Her relationship with Antonius is portrayed as more affectionate than the calculated seduction of Caesar, and it ultimately leads to her downfall as his devotion to her causes him to neglect his Roman duties. In contrast, Octavian, Caesar's cold grand‑nephew, remains immune to her charms and views her only as a political obstacle to be removed.

Throughout the film, Kleopatra develops from a vulnerable young queen into the most powerful woman of the ancient world, but she eventually faces the collapse of her power after the Battle of Actium. She realizes the transient nature of her influence and accepts her mortality, leading to her iconic suicide by the bite of an asp. Her notable abilities include a mastery of political manipulation, seduction as a strategic weapon, and the physical enhancement gained through surgery. She also displays a sharp intellect in navigating the treacherous politics of Rome and Egypt, though her ambitions are ultimately thwarted by the forces of history and the rise of Octavian.
