Description
Puss, known as Pero in the original Japanese version and as Pussty in the English dub, is the protagonist of the 1976 anime film Puss n' Boots Travels Around the World. He is an anthropomorphic cat who enters the story as an adventurer with a colorful past. Born in a cat kingdom where saving a mouse was considered a crime that violated the laws of his kind, he was declared an outlaw and forced to live as a wanderer, constantly pursued by a team of three bumbling feline assassins sent to capture him. At the start of the film he has settled into an ordinary life as a waiter in a restaurant, but his restless, spirited nature soon pulls him back into adventure.

Personality-wise, Puss is an optimist with a bold and energetic manner. He is quick-witted, talkative, and full of confidence, often charging into situations with a swagger that matches his adventurous lifestyle. Beneath this bravado he has a strong sense of justice, which is rooted in his past act of compassion toward a mouse and which guides him to defend his friends whenever they are threatened. He is also impulsive and proud, traits that lead him directly into the central conflict of the film. When the arrogant and wealthy Grumon behaves rudely in the restaurant where Puss works, Puss refuses to back down, and the argument escalates into a high-stakes wager: Puss claims he can travel around the world in eighty days. If he succeeds, he will receive Grumon's entire fortune; if he fails, he will become Grumon's slave for life.

Puss's motivation throughout the story is therefore twofold. On the surface, he is driven by the desire to win the bet and prove that a simple cat can outdo a wealthy and powerful opponent, but the journey also becomes a matter of personal honor and survival, since losing would mean the permanent loss of his freedom. His loyalty to his companions gives him an additional reason to keep going, as he refuses to abandon his friends even when the obstacles seem insurmountable.

In the story, Puss is the leader and heart of the expedition. He sets the goal, makes the plans, and keeps the group moving forward even as Grumon sends obstacle after obstacle in his path. He is joined by Carter, an easygoing hippopotamus cook who serves as his friend and the group's chef, and by a brave mouse father and son pair, who are close to him despite the natural enmity between cats and mice, a friendship that echoes the act of mercy that first made him an outlaw. The main antagonist is Grumon, a greedy and treacherous multimillionaire pig who sabotages the trip by dispatching his agents to interfere; these agents include Professor Garigari, a brilliant scientist who builds mechanical devices such as a giant mammoth machine to attack the travelers, and the mysterious and beautiful Suzanna, who tries to deceive Puss by pretending to be a damsel in distress. The three cat assassins from his past also reappear as they chase him across the globe, adding comic pressure to an already difficult journey.

Over the course of the adventure, Puss develops from a carefree wanderer into a dependable hero. He begins as a boastful trickster who relies on his wits, but the trials of the journey draw out his courage, his resourcefulness, and his devotion to those traveling with him. He learns to trust his friends and to take responsibility not just for winning the bet but for keeping everyone safe. His growth is shown in his willingness to face danger head-on and in the loyalty he inspires in his companions, who stand by him even when the odds are against them.

Puss possesses a number of notable abilities that make him a formidable adventurer. He is clever and quick-thinking, able to turn a disadvantageous situation to his favor through improvisation and deception. He is also extremely dexterous with his hands and a natural engineer, capable of building his own vehicles, including a submarine and an airplane, to continue the journey through difficult terrain. He is a skillful fighter who can hold his own against larger opponents and mechanical enemies, and his agility allows him to escape tight situations. Combined with his bold personality and his talent for leading others, these skills allow him to overcome the schemes of Grumon and his agents and complete one of the most famous challenges in adventure fiction.
