Description
In the 1976 anime film Puss n' Boots Around the World, also known as Nagagutsu wo Haita Neko: 80 Nichikan Sekai Isshuu, the character Grumon serves as the primary antagonist. He is depicted as a treacherous and insanely wealthy multimillionaire whose physical appearance is that of a large, anthropomorphic pig. Grumon embodies the archetype of a snobbish aristocrat, holding a position of high status as a bullysquatting local rich gentleman in London. His demeanor is characterized by arrogance and a firm belief that his own opinion is the only correct one, traits that frame him as a classic villain motivated by pride and a desire to maintain his power.

Grumon's central role in the story is triggered by his dismissive and mocking behavior towards others, specifically when he ridicules a newspaper editor's claim that traveling around the world in under a year might be possible. When the brave cat Pero interjects to defend the editor, Grumon feels he has been made a fool of. In response, he proposes a high-stakes wager that forms the core of the film's plot: Pero must attempt to travel around the entire globe in just eighty days. The terms of this bet are severe, reflecting Grumon's cruel nature. If Pero is successful, Grumon is forced to surrender his entire fortune; however, if Pero fails, he will become Grumon's lifelong slave.

True to his treacherous and wealthy characterization, Grumon is not content to simply wait for the outcome of the bet. He actively tries to prevent Pero and his friends from reaching the finish line, employing every trick in his arsenal to sabotage their journey. This includes enlisting the help of a suspicious wolf to follow the travelers and create delays on their voyage around the world. Through these actions, Grumon's motivations are made clear: he is driven by a desire to protect his immense wealth and social standing, and he will use his resources and cunning to ensure victory, regardless of fairness. Throughout the film, Grumon maintains his role as a consistent and unrepentant adversary, using his power to create obstacles for the heroes without undergoing any significant character development or change of heart. His notable abilities are not physical but rather social and financial; his vast riches allow him to orchestrate schemes and exert influence, making him a formidable opponent for Pero and a key driver of the film's conflict.
