Description
Keroberos, affectionately known as Kero-chan, is a magical guardian and a central figure in the theatrical short "Leave it to Kero! Theatrical Version." Originally created by the powerful sorcerer Clow Reed to watch over the Clow Cards, Kero-chan is the self-proclaimed "Beast of the Seal" tasked with choosing a worthy successor to master the cards. This film places him in an alternate reality where he exists in a human form, working as a teacher at an elementary school and living a normal life without his magical powers.
Kero-chan's personality is marked by a cheerful, talkative, and somewhat self-important nature. He has a deep love for fun, often spending his free time playing video games or indulging in his insatiable sweet tooth, with a particular fondness for takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and strawberry tarts. He speaks with a distinctive Kansai dialect, a trait acquired from being sealed within the Clow Book in Osaka for several decades. Despite his gluttonous and sometimes bossy demeanor, he is genuinely wise, caring, and deeply loyal to those he considers friends.
The primary motivation for Kero-chan in this theatrical version is protection and responsibility. Even without his magical abilities, his inherent guardian instincts drive him to act when he encounters a student named Akiho, who is being pursued by a mysterious shadow. His main goal becomes discovering the nature of this threat and protecting Akiho, relying on his human intellect and courage rather than his traditional powers. He learns to depend on his own human strengths and the support of his friends to prevent the resurrection of an ancient demon tied to the shadow.
In the story's role, Kero-chan functions as an unlikely hero and protector. Stripped of his usual powers, he must solve puzzles and face challenges using only his wits and determination. Key relationships in this narrative include his bond with Akiho, the student he feels compelled to save, and his friends from his original life, such as Sakura Kinomoto, who appears in this reality without her magical memories but still offers unexpected help. Other notable interactions involve his friendly rivalry with Spinel Sun, another guardian creature, which in other contexts leads to comedic competitions, such as a frantic chase over the last piece of takoyaki.
Throughout the film, Kero-chan undergoes a clear development arc. While he is typically known for his magical prowess, in this alternate setting he is forced to adapt to a life without it. He evolves from a being defined by his magical duty to one who learns the value of his human connections and inner strength, learning important lessons about courage and solidarity. His notable abilities are almost entirely absent in this reality, as he possesses no magical powers for most of the story. In his original context, however, his powers are based on the sun and include the ability to breathe fire, fly with his wings in his true form of a large winged lion, sense magical presences, and cast protective energy barriers. His true form is typically only accessible when his master commands the Firey and Earthy cards, which represent the elements under his jurisdiction.
