Description
Masaru Kaneda is a student at Doumori Elementary School and a member of Class 5-3, where he initially establishes himself as the self-proclaimed class bully. He has a slightly wider, tougher build than most of his classmates and is known for trying to dominate those he considers weaker, often targeting the smaller boy Makoto Kurita. Kaneda's early behavior is aggressive and confrontational, and he frequently challenges anyone who stands in his way.
Kaneda's motivation begins as a desire to maintain his top-dog status through physical intimidation and dominance. However, a significant turning point occurs when he becomes tormented by a monstrous bird called Itsumade, a creature born from grudges. With the help of his teacher, Meisuke Nueno, Kaneda escapes the creature's influence and begins to change his ways. From that point onward, he shows a gradual but genuine shift in attitude, developing a more chivalrous and protective nature. This redemption arc turns him from a mean, unpopular bully into one of the most heartfelt examples of personal growth in the series.
His role in the story evolves from antagonist within the school to a loyal ally. Kaneda becomes a key supporting character in many supernatural battles against demons, yokai, and other evil spirits. He is among the most reliable and courageous students, always ready to assist Nube when danger arises. His willingness to stand up for others, combined with his physical strength and newfound sense of justice, makes him a valuable asset in the class's encounters with the supernatural.
Kaneda's key relationships include his classmates, especially his former victim Makoto Kurita, and the transfer student Hiroshi Tateno, who eventually takes over the fight leader position in the class. His bond with Nube is central to his development; Nube's guidance and protection help Kaneda confront his own inner demons and his traumatic past. That past involves his father, a former yakuza boss who was assassinated by a rival gang. Kaneda was the sole witness to the murder, forcing his family to enter hiding under changed identities and witness protection. The memory of his father's death haunts him, causing nightmares and panic attacks, but his experiences at school and with Nube help him gradually overcome this fear.
Notable abilities include his physical toughness and combat skills, which he uses both in bullying and later in protecting others. He is physically stronger than the average student and possesses a determined, competitive spirit. Though he does not have any supernatural powers, his bravery, loyalty, and willingness to fight alongside his teacher make him a formidable ally against threats to the school and its students.
Throughout the series, Kaneda's development is marked by a lasting transformation from a bully who ruled by fear to a caring friend who puts himself at risk for the sake of others. His character arc exemplifies redemption and the positive influence of a devoted teacher.
