Description
Takeru Myōjin, originally named Mars, is the protagonist of the anime God Mars: Untold Legend and the larger Six God Combination God Mars series. He is a seventeen-year-old male from the planet Gishin, sent to Earth as an infant by Emperor Zuul alongside the giant robot Gaia, which contains an anti-proton bomb powerful enough to destroy the planet. The emperor intended for the child to grow up and trigger the bomb, thereby eliminating Earth as a threat to the Gishin empire.

Upon arrival, the baby was found by the Japanese scientist Dr. Myōjin and his wife Shizuko, who adopted him and raised him as their own son, giving him the name Takeru. Because of this loving upbringing, Takeru developed a deep affection for Earth and humanity. When the time came to activate the bomb, he refused, choosing instead to defend his adopted world. This defiance puts him in direct conflict with his birth planet and its ruler.

Takeru is a kind and compassionate young man who believes strongly in justice and peace. He is courageous and willing to risk his life to protect others, but he also struggles with the weight of his dual heritage. Learning that he is a Gishinite sometimes causes him to be viewed with suspicion by those around him, and he grapples with feelings of isolation and the pressure of his unique destiny. Despite these challenges, he remains steadfast in his resolve to fight for Earth.

He serves as a member of the Crasher Squad, an elite space-defense unit within the Earth Defense Forces, where he pilots the robot Gaia. Through his psychic abilities, he can mentally summon five other hidden robots—Sphinx, Uranus, Titan, Shin, and Ra—which combine with Gaia to form the giant super robot God Mars. His role in the story is that of Earth’s primary defender against the Gishin invasion and later conflicts involving the planet Marmelo and other extraterrestrial threats.

A central relationship in his life is with his twin brother Marg, who was raised on Gishin. Emperor Zuul manipulates Marg by erasing his memories and forcing him to become a general opposing Takeru. The tragic brother-against-brother conflict forms an emotional core of the narrative. Through their battles, Takeru eventually learns the truth about his biological parents and his origins. Marg ultimately sacrifices himself to save Takeru, an event that deeply affects Takeru and strengthens his determination to end the war.

Takeru also maintains close bonds with his foster parents, especially his mother Shizuko, and with his fellow Crasher Squad members such as Naoto Ijuin and Akira Kiso. Later, he forms a connection with Roze, a woman loyal to his brother, whom he eventually brings into the team.

Over the course of the series, Takeru undergoes significant personal growth. Initially a reluctant hero burdened by a fate he did not choose, he gradually accepts his responsibilities and learns to trust his own strength and the support of his friends. He confronts prejudice and fear from humans who distrust him because of his alien origins, but he wins their respect through his actions. By the end of the story, after defeating Emperor Zuul and liberating the Gishin empire, he chooses to leave Earth alone to protect the peace of the universe, demonstrating his maturity and selflessness.

Takeru possesses powerful psychic abilities, including telepathy, telekinesis, and precognition, which often alert him to danger. He can also generate an energy shield and direct damaging psychic blasts. When piloting God Mars, he uses the robot’s arsenal, which includes God Fire, a paralysis-inducing chest beam; the energy-absorbing Uranus Freezer; the Mars Flash sword, which can reflect enemy attacks; and the final finishing move, Final God Mars. His mental energy is essential for summoning and maintaining the six-robot combination; if his life is in danger or his powers are depleted, the combination fails, and Gaia’s internal bomb would detonate upon his death, a vulnerability that drives much of the tension in the story.
