Description
Kyōsuke Tamamo is a 400-year-old yōko, a high-ranking fox spirit whose true name is Dakigongen Tenko. He first appears as an antagonist in the story, arriving in the human world as a strikingly handsome young man with long golden hair. His initial goal is to complete a technique called the human transformation jutsu, which requires a perfectly compatible human skull. He identifies the skull of the student Hiroshi Tateno as ideal and infiltrates Dōmori Elementary School as an education intern to get close to his target. His true nature is soon discovered by the protagonist, Meisuke Nueno, also known as Nube, and the two engage in battle. Although Tamamo nearly defeats Nube, he is ultimately overcome by Hiroshi’s courage and Nube’s determination. After this defeat, Tamamo becomes fascinated by Nube’s ability to draw on immense power when protecting his students—a power Tamamo recognizes as stemming from human love, a concept he does not understand. He decides to remain in the human world to study this phenomenon, adopting the identity of a surgeon at Dōmori Hospital while keeping a close watch on Nube and his class.
Tamamo is characterized by a calm, logical, and prideful demeanor. He is disciplined and methodical, often appearing cold and calculating, especially in his early encounters where he shows no mercy toward evil spirits and is willing to sacrifice one person to save many. He follows the ancient laws of the yōko, which mandate that they bring calamity to humans who are rude, and he initially looks down on human emotions as weakness. Over time, however, his repeated interactions with Nube and his students gradually soften his outlook. He forms a genuine bond of rivalry and respect with Nube, who nicknames him Tama-chan or Tamamo-chi, much to his annoyance. Tamamo also develops a complex relationship with the young itako Izuna Hazuki; he initially defeats her in a duel but later consciously loses, acknowledging her spirit, and acts as an unseen guardian as she grows. His attachment to Hiroshi deepens to the point that he can no longer bring himself to take the boy’s skull, even when he has the opportunity. This internal conflict drives a major part of his character arc.
Tamamo’s role in the story evolves from a primary antagonist to a crucial ally and rival. He frequently cooperates with Nube against common threats, such as the monstrous fish spirit or the demon Zekki, and his tactical insight and vast knowledge of the supernatural prove invaluable. He serves as a foil to Nube, representing a cold, pragmatic approach versus Nube’s emotional and sacrificial style. Later, when Nube is incapacitated, Tamamo steps up to protect the students, unleashing his ultimate technique, the Mekido, at the cost of his own life force—a clear sign that he has come to care deeply for the humans around him. His physical deterioration from prolonged use of a mismatched skull nearly leads to his death, but he is saved by the Nine-Tailed Fox after undergoing a trial in which his newfound love and compassion are recognized. The Fox grants him a new tail, restoring his power and reaffirming his evolution. From that point, he becomes Nube’s steadfast friend and continues to defend the town and its children in subsequent sequels.
Tamamo’s most notable abilities include mastery of foxfire, which he can project as powerful flames or concentrated beams, and advanced illusion magic that can manipulate perception even to the point of creating realistic clones. He wields a specialized weapon called a neck‑catcher, shaped like a paw, which can extend to capture opponents or dismantle into a barrier for close‑range combat. His centuries of accumulated knowledge give him expertise in medicine, exorcism, and spiritual techniques; he can even replicate Nube’s Yang Spirit technique, though less perfectly. In his true yōko form, he stands 190 cm tall with nine tails and immense strength, capable of matching Nube’s Demon Hand in combat. His growth is marked by the gradual emergence of a limitless spiritual power similar to Nube’s, indicating that he has begun to internalize the very human emotions he once dismissed. By the end of his story, Tamamo has become a being who blends yōko pride with a genuine understanding of love and sacrifice, cementing his place as one of the series’ most layered characters.
