Description
Fumiko is one of the three central characters in the anime. She originally comes from Niigata and travels to Tokyo with the singular ambition of becoming a popular singer and achieving the status of an idol. Her dream, however, is nearly destroyed by a traumatic event: a producer in the music industry attempts to rape her. This experience leaves her deeply disillusioned, desperate, and on the verge of suicide, which is the dire state the other two main characters find her in.
Fumiko's personality is shaped by this recent trauma and the harsh realities of the entertainment world. She begins her journey in a state of deep despondency and vulnerability, having lost her initial hopeful drive. However, beneath her fragile exterior, she possesses a resilience that emerges when she is given a second chance. Her decision to join the newly formed idol group is not just an escape from her immediate crisis but a rekindling of her original passion for singing.
In the story, Fumiko acts as the third member of the titular idol group, which is formed by two schoolgirls from Kyoto who have won a large sum of money in a lottery. While the other two girls are portrayed as energetic and somewhat reckless with their newfound wealth, Fumiko provides a more grounded, though initially wounded, perspective. Her deep-seated desire to perform and her previous, albeit negative, encounter with the industry give her a unique position within the trio. The group's central conflict is directly tied to her past, as the unscrupulous composer who assaulted her returns as a primary antagonist, sabotaging their efforts and plotting revenge against them.
Key relationships are central to Fumiko's role. Her bond with the two girls who save her, Natsuki and Haruka, is the foundation of the group. Their impulsive decision to use their lottery winnings to fund her dream and form a team pulls her out of despair. A male acquaintance who intervenes in her suicide attempt also becomes an ally, and another friend is recruited to be their manager, forming a support network that contrasts sharply with the predatory forces she faced alone. The antagonist composer represents the dark side of the industry she sought to join and serves as a physical and psychological threat she must confront.
Development for Fumiko is closely tied to her recovery and empowerment. She transitions from a passive, despairing victim into an active, performing idol. When the group faces hostility from rival acts, which eventually escalates into physical confrontations, she is shown to be capable of defending herself. The narrative includes scenes where the idol group engages in physical altercations with rivals, demonstrating that all three girls, including Fumiko, possess some level of martial arts or fighting ability. This physical prowess becomes crucial when they are later kidnapped by their antagonists and must fight to escape an uninhabited island. Her notable abilities, therefore, extend beyond singing and performing to include a surprising capacity for hand-to-hand combat, which she uses to protect herself and her friends from the severe threats they face.
