Description
Gades is a character from the film Fist of the North Star: The Legend of Kenshiro, serving as a minor antagonist in the original storyline that bridges the gap between Kenshiro's defeat by Shin and his later battles.

Gades is a massive and physically imposing man, initially introduced as a slave owned by a man named Jinia. He has earned the fearsome nickname the Bear Killer, a title that speaks to his great strength and his reputation as a formidable fighter in the brutal, post-apocalyptic world. He is presented as a brute who relies on his raw power and is proficient with various melee weapons, including swords and spears.

His primary role in the story is to act as an obstacle for the protagonist, Kenshiro. When Kenshiro is held as a slave in Gesso City, still recovering from the seven wounds inflicted upon his chest, Gades is sent into the slave arena to fight him. At this point, Gades is an arrogant and confident fighter. Upon meeting Kenshiro, he boasts about his own prowess, threatening to rip off the Hokuto Shinken master's head. He dismisses Kenshiro’s reputation as a wolf killer, considering himself superior.

However, Kenshiro quickly turns the tables, not through brute force, but by mocking Gades, derisively calling him a bear cub killer to insult his strength and provoke him. Despite his own weakened state, Kenshiro effectively uses his superior martial arts skill, specifically the pressure point techniques of Hokuto Shinken. He lands a precise finger strike on Gades, incapacitating him and winning the fight. This encounter humiliates Gades and establishes him as a secondary threat compared to Kenshiro.

Later in the film, following his defeat, Gades aligns himself with a warlord named Jugai and his army. Jugai leads an attack on the city, and Gades joins the invading forces, seeing an opportunity for revenge. He confronts Kenshiro once again, this time on a battlefield where the stakes are much higher. In their second encounter, Kenshiro is no longer hampered by his injuries or the need to protect other slaves. Therefore, he shows his opponent no mercy. Kenshiro defeats Gades for a second and final time, using a Hokuto Shinken technique that causes his massive upper body to burst apart from within.

Gades does not undergo any significant development throughout the story. He remains a straightforward, aggressive, and opportunistic fighter whose motivations are simple survival, glory, and revenge. His key relationships are defined by his servitude to his master Jinia, his brief alliance with the warlord Jugai, and his antagonistic rivalry with Kenshiro. He serves primarily as a narrative device to demonstrate two things: Kenshiro's mercy and incredible skill even when near death, and the lethal effectiveness of Hokuto Shinken when he is fully recovered and resolved to eliminate a threat.
