TV Special
Description
Manuel is a minor character who appears at the very beginning of the story. He works as the gardener’s helper on the estate of Judge Miller in California’s Santa Clara Valley. Manuel is portrayed as a man who is deeply in debt due to his gambling habit, and his desperation for money leads him to commit a dishonest act. One night, he steals Buck, Judge Miller’s large and well‑cared‑for dog, from the property and sells him to a stranger. This single action sets the entire plot in motion, as it forces Buck out of his comfortable, domesticated life and into the harsh world of the Klondike gold rush. Manuel himself does not appear again after this event; his role is limited to being the catalyst for Buck’s journey. His personality is defined by moral weakness and a willingness to betray trust for personal gain. He has no notable abilities or further development, and his relationship with Buck exists only as an act of betrayal. Manuel’s motivations are purely financial, driven by the need to settle his gambling debts, and he shows no remorse for the consequences of his theft.
