TV-Series
Description
Kaname Kenjo is a student at St. Spica Girls' Academy, one of the three affiliated schools on Astraea Hill. She holds a position on Spica's student council. Her appearance is distinctive; she is a tall student who presents in a masculine fashion, with neck-length black hair and sharp red eyes. Her personality is consistently described as domineering, forceful, and devious. She is confident to the point of considering herself irresistible and dismisses any objections to her actions or worldview.
A core aspect of Kaname's character is her deep-seated jealousy and complex feelings toward a fellow student, Amane Ohtori. Since their early days at Spica, Amane has effortlessly bested Kaname in academics and athletics, creating an intense rivalry that Kaname cannot resolve. This history of defeat fuels her primary motivation: to win the prestigious Etoile title, the highest student honor representing the three schools. She desires this victory not only for the prestige but specifically to triumph over Amane, with whom she is also partnered in her schemes. Her fixation on Amane is so profound that self-comparison to her rival has become a central factor of her identity, and it is suggested that Kaname once felt an attraction to her as well.
In the story, Kaname functions as one of the primary antagonists, working alongside her close ally and lover, Momomi Kiyashiki. She and Momomi share an explicitly romantic and sexual relationship, depicted as the first clear lesbian couple in the series, and they are often seen sharing intimate moments, such as bathing together. Their shared goal is to become the first Etoile representatives from Spica Academy. To achieve this, they scheme to sabotage Amane's potential candidacy by targeting her close friend and prospective partner, Hikari Konohana.
Kaname's methods are manipulative and often aggressive. She devises plots to isolate Hikari, such as forging a letter from Amane to lure her into a secluded meeting. In these encounters, she attempts to seduce Hikari, using persuasive language and metaphors like the story of Icarus to warn her against getting too close to Amane's "sun". When persuasion fails, Kaname resorts to physical restraint and makes unwanted advances, actions that are repeatedly interrupted by Amane's timely interventions. Despite these villainous tactics, she adheres to a personal code of honor, desiring victory through her own achievement rather than a forfeit from her rival.
Over the course of the narrative, Kaname undergoes a degree of development. Her relentless fixation on Amane eventually reaches a turning point. She challenges Amane to a decisive tennis match, during which she confesses her long-held feelings and history of admiration and jealousy. Following this confrontation and a definitive defeat, she steps back from her obsessive rivalry. In the end, she reconciles with Momomi, shifting her focus away from her antagonistic pursuit of Amane and toward contentment within her own relationship. Her notable abilities include her athletic skill, particularly in tennis, her talent for manipulation and scheming, and a strong, persuasive will that makes her a formidable presence within the academy.
