TV-Series
Description
Kaoru Kiryu is a character who initially serves as an antagonist before becoming a close ally to the main heroines. She is a teenager with long cerulean blue hair and indigo purple eyes. A distinctive feature of her initial appearance is that her eyes lack light reflections, which symbolizes her closed-off and unawakened emotional state at the start of the story. She wears the standard uniform of Yuunagi Middle School when operating undercover.
Kaoru is a creation of the villain Akudaikan, and together with her sister Michiru, she is one of the few members of the Dark Fall organization to possess a fully human form. Her true identity as an agent of Dark Fall is hidden beneath the guise of a transfer student. Her name contains characters related to mist and fragrance, which alludes to her mysterious nature and her eventual affiliation with wind-based powers.
In terms of personality, Kaoru initially presents a cold, dismissive, and rational facade, appearing even more distant than her sister. This surface-level coolness, however, masks a nature that is surprisingly more sensitive to emotions and personal connections than she lets on. She is also notably lacking in common sense regarding everyday human life, often bewildering her classmates with her fundamental questions or startling them with blunt, candid answers. Despite this social awkwardness, she is exceptionally gifted, capable of comprehending an entire textbook with a single glance and mastering any physical activity once the rules are explained. Her honesty can be perceived as frankness, but she does not judge people based on appearances.
Her primary motivation throughout the story undergoes a significant transformation. Initially, her sole purpose is to serve Akudaikan's wish of destroying all worlds, a goal she states without hesitation. However, as she and Michiru are ordered to pose as students to spy on the heroines Saki and Mai, her purpose begins to shift. Through genuine interactions, she starts questioning her own desires separate from her creator's will. A pivotal moment occurs when she gives heartfelt advice to Saki's younger sister, Minori, and receives a sincere expression of gratitude in return, which causes her to begin opening her heart. Ultimately, her motivation evolves from destruction to self-determination, culminating in a dream of living peacefully and drawing pictures with her friends.
Kaoru's role in the story is complex. She begins as a spy and an executive of Dark Fall, tasked with defeating the Pretty Cures. However, her role changes when she and Michiru directly confront the heroines, reveal their identities to honor their friendship, and ultimately rebel against their creator. After being captured and seemingly sealed away, she is later resurrected to fight alongside the Pretty Cure against the remnants of Dark Fall. In the final battle, she receives the power of the wind to become a being comparable to a Pretty Cure named Cure Windy, cementing her role as a true ally.
Key relationships define Kaoru's development. Her most important bond is with Kiryuu Michiru, whom she considers a sister. They are almost always together, and Kaoru often lets Michiru speak for the pair, privately admitting that she is amazed by Michiru's ability to communicate with others. Her relationship with the heroines Saki and Mai is the catalyst for her change, as their unwavering desire to protect her and Michiru shakes her resolve to fight them. She also forms a unique and tender bond with the young Minori, treating the child as an equal and becoming fiercely protective of her. Additionally, she once saved the fairies Moop and Foop from danger, an act that left a lasting positive impression on them.
Kaoru experiences significant development from a seemingly emotionless tool of destruction into an individual with her own dreams and heart. A visual representation of this growth is the change in her eyes; after gaining a new life and the power of the wind, light reflections appear in her once-empty eyes, symbolizing her awakened mind and emotional awakening. She learns the value of friendship, self-sacrifice, and ultimately chooses her own fate over the one she was created for.
Regarding notable abilities, Kaoru possesses enhanced physical abilities that allow her to engage in hand-to-hand combat on par with the main Cures, Cure Bloom and Cure Egret. Her primary attack as a Dark Fall member involves firing concentrated blasts of dark red energy at her opponents. Later, after being resurrected and receiving power from the spirits, she gains the abilities of the wind, transforming into Cure Windy. In this form, she can perform the powerful final attack Spiral Heart Splash Star alongside her sister and the two main Cures.
