Description
Griffin Arbalest is a character from the film Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM, serving as a member of the Black Knight Squad, the personal royal guard of Queen Aura of the Kingdom of Foundation, a newly established nation that has declared independence from the Earth Federation.

Born on August 16, Cosmic Era 56, Griffin is notably young, being around eighteen years old during the events of the film. Physically, he has a distinct appearance characterized by a close-cropped hairstyle with shaved sections on the sides of his head, while the remaining hair on the sides is dyed green. He also has notably thick eyebrows. At a height of 159 centimeters, he is one of the shorter members of his unit.

At first glance, Griffin can appear reckless, impulsive, and even carefree, behaving in a manner that might seem to lack caution or proper manners. However, this superficial demeanor hides the fact that his abilities as a soldier and a pilot are exceptionally high. Like his fellow Black Knight Squad members, he possesses a strong sense of superiority and a narcissistic personality, a trait common to those identified as Accords, which influences his interactions with others. This manifests as a clear contempt for those he considers beneath him, as seen when he openly disrespects and taunts his enemies, including the celebrated pilot Kira Yamato and Shinn Asuka, treating them with derisive language and a dismissive attitude.

Griffins primary and most notable ability is his powerful mental interference capability. As an Accord, he possesses this special mental power which he uses to great effect in combat. His specific talent lies in the ability to create powerful mental illusions and brainwash his targets, seemingly without needing direct eye contact, even while piloting a mobile suit. During a pivotal battle, he successfully uses this power against Kira Yamato, creating a phantom image of an enemy commander that causes Kira to chase a non-existent target, effectively trapping him and forcing him into a violation of a peace agreement. Griffin accompanies this act with the command for Kira to "Fall into the darkness".

In addition to his mental abilities, Griffin is a highly skilled mobile suit pilot. He pilots a customized unit of the Black Knight Squad's main mobile suit, the Rudra, which is specifically designated with the name "Emerald". During the films conflicts, he demonstrates his combat prowess by easily overwhelming Shinn Asuka, piloting an Immortal Justice unit. Griffin mocks Shinn's lack of learning ability and proves his own effectiveness by rendering Shinn's beam rifle ineffective with the Rudras Femtech armor before ultimately shooting him down.

His role in the story is fundamentally antagonistic, acting as an elite operative for the Foundation Kingdom. His primary function within his squad is to use his unique skills to destabilize the protagonists of the peacekeeping organization Compass. The key relationship for Griffin is his adversarial one with Kira Yamato, whom he successfully manipulates and incapacitates through his mental interference. He also has a significant confrontational dynamic with Shinn Asuka, whom he defeats in mobile suit combat and openly mocks, looking down on him for a previous loss to another Black Knight member. Throughout the film, Griffin does not undergo significant character development; he remains a consistently arrogant and formidable antagonist whose actions are driven by his loyalty to the Foundation and his belief in his own superiority as an Accord.
