Description
Glicko the chipmunk is the main protagonist of the 1981 anime film Enchanted Journey. He lives a comfortable, domestic life in a big city apartment with his sister, Fluff. Glicko is a slender chipmunk with brown fur and dark stripes, a notable stripe on his forehead, and a white undertail. He is consistently depicted wearing a green bandanna around his neck.
In terms of personality, Glicko is playful, energetic, optimistic, and somewhat mischievous. When a carrier pigeon named Pippo tells him about the vast North Forest, where chipmunks roam free, Glicko becomes convinced that this wild place is his true home, and that his life in the apartment is too small for him. Despite Pippo’s warnings about the numerous dangers on the journey, such as foxes and hawks, Glicko makes up his mind to go on the quest no matter what. His sister, Fluff, does not share his dream but ultimately helps him escape from their home so he can pursue it.
Upon leaving the city and eventually arriving at a zoo, Glicko meets a female chipmunk named Nono, who also wishes to go to the North Forest. Glicko is initially against her coming along and resents her company, but he reluctantly agrees to let her join him after learning she was taken to the zoo. Throughout their journey, Glicko’s role evolves from a solitary adventurer into a dedicated protector. He begins to care deeply for Nono and often sacrifices his own safety to save her from predators and other threats. When Nono is injured or falls ill and urges him to leave her behind, Glicko refuses, reminding her that he will stay with her no matter what. He remains convinced that they will reach the forest and consistently urges her to keep going, even when she doubts they will survive the winter climate.
Glicko’s key relationships define much of his journey. Pippo the pigeon serves as the initial source of his dream and later reappears to help guide the chipmunks to their destination. Fluff, his sister, represents the safe, domestic life he leaves behind, and he requests that Pippo tell her about the forest once he has succeeded. His relationship with Nono is central to the story, transforming from reluctant tolerance to a strong, caring bond. He also encounters other characters, such as a sewer rat named Gamba who helps him navigate the city, and a chipmunk named Zipzip at the zoo.
Glicko demonstrates notable development from a naive, domestically raised pet into a courageous and resourceful survivor. He learns to face dangerous predators, including a hawk and a cunning fox that stalks him and Nono. His abilities are not supernatural but are rooted in his cleverness, determination, and bravery. He devises plans to distract a hawk by leading it into a thicket, endures harsh winter conditions to find food like tree bark for a weakened Nono, and ultimately confronts the fox to defend the other chipmunks after reaching the North Forest. In the final confrontation, he makes a daring leap across a ravine to escape the fox, surviving while his enemy falls, thus securing his place in the new home he had sought for so long.
