Description
Iinchou, a supporting character in My Bride is a Mermaid, is the class president of Isono Junior High School. Her real name is Iina Chiyo, but she is known to everyone by her title, as her real name remains a mystery for most of the story. Physically, she is characterized by her green hair and eyes and her stature of 165 centimeters. She typically wears thick glasses, which she uses to obscure what is otherwise a notably beautiful face; when she removes or changes her glasses, her appearance is dramatically enhanced, enough to capture the attention of others.
In terms of personality, Iinchou is initially presented as a passive and unassuming individual. Her presence is often so quiet that she is frequently overlooked by her classmates, despite holding the important position of class president. She is a close and loyal friend to another classmate, Mawari Zenigata, and their friendship is a consistent aspect of her daily school life. This reserved exterior, however, conceals a more complex inner world, including a deep, unrequited crush on the protagonist, Nagasumi Michishio.
Iinchous motivations and role in the story are heavily tied to her hidden feelings and the alternate persona she adopts to express them. When her shy attempts to gain attention or confess her love fail, she transforms into the Last Amazoness, a confident, aggressive, and girl-loving warrior persona. This transformation is triggered when she removes her glasses or finds herself in a situation requiring a boost in self-confidence. For instance, after mistakenly addressing a love letter for Nagasumi to Seto San, she adopts this role to boldly pursue San, whom she then views as a rival and object of affection. Her secret desire is for people to discover her real name, a wish that is only fulfilled at the very end of the manga.
As the Last Amazoness, Iinchou becomes a more active and chaotic force within the story. In this state, she is a capable fighter who, later in the series, obtains a mermaid weapon called Gender-X from the character Surtan. This weapon has the ability to reverse a person's gender, and she uses it to combat troublemakers. She also forms an unlikely partnership with Maki, whom she perceives as a fairy, demonstrating her unique interpretation of the world and the people around her.
Throughout the series, Iinchous development is marked by her struggle between her natural timidity and her desire to be noticed. Her creation of the Last Amazoness persona is a direct response to her feelings of insecurity and her hidden passions, allowing her to act on impulses her reserved self would never acknowledge. This dual nature provides much of her character's humor and conflict. Her relationships evolve from being passively crushing on Nagasumi to actively warring with and pursuing San as the Last Amazoness, all while maintaining her quiet friendship with Mawari. Notably, her signature ability is not a standard combat skill but the transformative shift into the Last Amazoness persona itself, a state that grants her the confidence, assertiveness, and fighting spirit she otherwise lacks.
