TV-Series
Description
Kawarino serves as the personal secretary to Desperaia, the leader of the Nightmare organization. He holds the position of the highest-ranking subordinate, effectively acting as her right hand and conveying her will to the other employees. His name is derived from a word suggesting trickery or transformation, which aligns with his motif modeled after a chameleon. He was directly responsible for the destruction of the Palmier Kingdom, having disguised himself as an injured Pinky to deceive Natts into opening the kingdom's gate, allowing Nightmare to invade.

In his human form, Kawarino appears as a slim, pale-skinned man with impeccably styled dark or greenish hair, yellow eyes, and a business suit. He typically maintains a calm, smiling expression with his eyes nearly shut. This polite and formal demeanor, however, masks a personality of profound cruelty and cold calculation. He is described as the most evil member of Nightmare, treating his colleagues not as comrades but as disposable tools. When he opens his eyes fully, his expression becomes instantly terrifying, instilling fear even in his fellow villains. Kawarino speaks with an ironic undertone, which adds to his sneaky and menacing character.

Kawarino's primary motivation is his deep and absolute loyalty to Desperaia. He justifies all his ruthless actions as being for her sake, and unlike some of his colleagues, he has no personal ambition to use the Dream Collet for himself, believing completely in Desperaia's supreme power. He is willing to sacrifice anyone to achieve his goals, including forcing his subordinates to use black Kowaina masks. These masks transform the wearer into a powerful but mindless monster, and he uses them as a final warning or a means of disposing of those he deems failures.

Throughout the story, Kawarino is a key antagonist who emerges from the shadows to directly confront the Pretty Cures. In a major early confrontation, he successfully traps four of the five Cures in nightmares and forces a mask of despair onto Cure Dream, nearly leading to their total defeat. Later, after discovering that all fifty-five Pinkies have been gathered, he attacks Coco, transforms into his likeness, and tricks Milk into handing over the Dream Collet. In the final battle, he reveals his true monster form, a gigantic, demonic chameleon with two long, striped tails. In this form, he demonstrates tremendous strength and resilience, easily overwhelming the Cures and even absorbing their energy attacks with his tails to redirect them. When he is eventually overpowered, he resorts to covering his body in black paper to grow even larger, but is still defeated by the Cures' combined attack.

Kawarino's key relationships are defined by his manipulative and tyrannical nature. He has a notably adversarial relationship with Bunbee, blaming him for failures and ultimately attacking him when he tries to resign. According to the character Bloody, Nightmare lost its team spirit after Kawarino became secretary. He manipulates Arachnea, sacrifices Gamao and Hadenya by forcing black masks on them, and when Bloody criticizes his methods, Kawarino forces a mask on him as well, dragging him into despair. His only moment of vulnerability occurs when Desperaia begins to doubt her own actions; the realization that his life's work could become meaningless causes him to break down, shattering his usual composure. After his final defeat at the hands of the Pretty Cures and as Desperaia is sealed away, a despairing Kawarino is grabbed and dragged into the darkness by Bloody, meeting his ambiguous end.

Kawarino possesses several notable abilities. He is a master of disguise and transformation, able to perfectly mimic the appearance of others like Pinky and Coco to deceive his enemies. He commands the power of darkness, allowing him to create spheres that can stop an enemy's movements, generate swamps of darkness, and trap individuals in personalized nightmares. In combat, he can fire destructive energy blasts, teleport, and use his powerful tails for both offense and defense. His most significant power is his control over the black Kowaina masks, which he uses to enhance or eliminate his subordinates.
