Description
Bernard Shott, often referred to by the nickname Bull, is a central antagonist in the anime Flight of the White Wolf. He is the leader of a determined hunting party, and his primary role in the story is to pursue the wolf Gray across a vast wilderness. His motivation is rooted in vengeance and a sense of personal justice, as his prized show dog, Bo, was killed by Gray in an act of self-defense. This loss drives Shott to organize an extensive manhunt, escalating the conflict that forces the wolf and its owner, Russet Clagg, to flee for their lives.

In terms of personality, Bernard Shott is characterized by his relentlessness and his willingness to employ aggressive, underhanded tactics to achieve his goal. He is not a subtle hunter; he coordinates search parties, authorizes the use of deceptive methods such as playing recorded wolf howls to lure Gray into an ambush, and sets leg traps in the wilderness. When initial efforts fail and the wolf escapes, even after being wounded, Shott's determination hardens. He threatens to use poison to kill Gray, an escalation that demonstrates the depth of his resolve and the danger he poses to the protagonists.

Shott's role in the story is that of the primary external threat. His pursuit creates the central tension of the narrative, as Russet and Gray must constantly evade his party while struggling to survive in the wild. His actions directly cause the pair to undertake a long, dangerous journey northward to a nature preserve, the Nicolet National Forest, where Gray can be safe. Throughout the hunt, Shott and his men use tracking dogs and traps, successfully capturing Gray in a leg trap at one point. Despite his ruthless efficiency, the pair manages to evade capture on multiple occasions, hiding in places such as near a beaver den.

Key relationships define his character, most notably his adversarial connection with Russet Clagg, the young owner of the wolf. Their conflict is the heart of the hunt. Shott also harbors a deep-seated animosity toward Gray, whom he views as a dangerous animal that must be destroyed. In a significant departure from the original novel, the anime adaptation provides Shott with a moment of development at the story's conclusion. After Gray successfully reaches the safety of the preserve and joins a wild wolf pack, Shott has a conversation with Russet. In this interaction, he abandons his mission and chooses to allow Gray to live, showing a capacity for change not present in other versions of the story.

Shott possesses notable abilities as a tracker and a leader of men. He effectively organizes and directs a hunting posse, coordinates wilderness searches, and understands how to use both technology and traditional methods, such as leg traps and hunting hounds, to pursue his quarry. His physical appearance in the anime is notably based on the design of the sheriff from the unrelated 1976 live-action Disney film adaptation, The Flight of the Grey Wolf. In the English dub of the anime, his name was changed to Mr. Brock in an attempt to rebrand the film as an adaptation of Jack London's White Fang.
