Description
Makoto Kyogoku is a high school karate champion nicknamed "The Prince of Kicks" for his extraordinary martial arts prowess. He first noticed Sonoko Suzuki when she energetically cheered for Ran Mouri at a tournament, sparking his interest. They later reunited at his family's inn, where he shielded Sonoko from a serial killer, strengthening their bond despite his frequent international absences for competitions and studies.

Calm and observant during crises, Makoto becomes visibly flustered around Sonoko. His devotion led him to forfeit a tournament—ending a 400-match winning streak—to meet her parents. Raised conservatively, he expresses concern over her modern clothing choices, citing health worries. He perpetually wears a band-aid above his left eyebrow, concealing a scar; it later holds personal significance as a talisman featuring a photo from their date.

Standing 184 cm tall with a muscular build, Makoto has a tan complexion, short dark hair, prominent eyebrows, and is often described as handsome. Outside competitions, he typically wears wide glasses.

Ranked among the series' most formidable fighters, Makoto holds multiple international karate titles. His feats include catching BB pellets from eleven attackers while blinded by a gas mask, incapacitating armed groups unharmed, shattering katanas with kicks, and demolishing structural pillars through repeated strikes. He halted a moving van by lifting its rear, threw a bowling ball with lane-damaging force, dodged bullets with hypersonic reactions, and ignored injuries like knife wounds during combat. His sharp observation detected minute discrepancies, such as identifying Kaito Kid disguised as Sonoko via finger-length differences.

Makoto repeatedly aids Conan Edogawa and allies in peril:
- During the "Bloody Valentine" case, he rescued Ran and Sonoko from armed assailants after being falsely accused of murder.
- In Singapore's "Blue Sapphire Fist" tournament, he confronted Kaito Kid and collaborated with Conan to thwart murder and theft plots.
- As an actor's understudy during a filming incident, he became a murder suspect but later prevented the true culprit's vehicular suicide, demonstrating protective instincts and physical prowess.

His relationship with Sonoko deepens through shared experiences, including her parents' eventual approval. Despite career demands and misunderstandings—like mistaking her handmade clay cup for a vase—their connection remains pivotal to his growth.
