Description
Chastille Lillqvist is a prominent character who serves as a holy knight for the Church, holding the prestigious title of Maiden of the Sacred Sword. She is the wielder of the legendary sacred blade Azrael, a weapon named after the Angel of Death, which grants her immense power and distinguishes her as one of the Church's most formidable assets. Her background is rooted in a family of fallen nobles, and her path to becoming a knight was driven by a desire to be of help to her older brother, Sylvester, who was already an Angelic Knight. As a child, she was often sick, but her health improved dramatically at the age of thirteen when she was chosen by the sacred sword Azrael, compelling her to dedicate herself to her new role and become the fastest of the Archangels.

In terms of appearance, Chastille is a young woman with fair skin and long, vivid scarlet hair and matching eyes. She typically keeps her hair tied up in a side ponytail, which gives her a somewhat tomboyish look when paired with her uniform or anointed armor. Her standard armor consists of white-lacquered chest armor, gauntlets, and high boots, complemented by a blue mini dress and a dual-colored cape. When off-duty, she lets her hair down and dresses in more casual attire, such as a high corseted garnet skirt.

Chastille’s personality presents a striking contrast between her professional and private life. As an Angelic Knight, she possesses a powerful sense of justice and duty, always willing to put her life on the line to save others, whether they be allies or former enemies. Her selfless and optimistic nature, combined with her belief in the possibility of coexistence between the Church and sorcerers, makes her the ideal public face for the Unification Faction. However, in her personal life, she is a complete klutz. She is prone to tripping, breaking things, and being easily deceived or teased, often to the point of tears. This endearing clumsiness and emotional vulnerability lead the sorcerer Barbatos to nickname her a crybaby.

Chastille’s role in the story evolves significantly from a traditional adversary to a crucial ally and a symbol of change. Initially, she follows the Church’s doctrine to capture or eliminate sorcerers, but her worldview is fundamentally challenged after she is saved by Zagan, an Archdemon. This act of kindness forces her to question the absolute justice the Church preaches. Her growing doubts make her a target within her own organization, and she survives an assassination attempt. Ultimately, she becomes the leader of the Unification Faction, a group dedicated to forming an alliance between the Church and sorcerers to confront greater threats. Her key relationships are central to her development. She shares a complex bond with Zagan, feeling deep gratitude and unrequited romantic affection for him, though she chooses to prioritise his happiness with the elf Nephy. Her relationship with the sorcerer Barbatos begins with mutual disdain but slowly transforms into a close, teasing partnership with hints of romantic potential. She also forges a strong friendship with the dark elf Nephteros, becoming one of the few people who understands her, and serves as a compassionate mentor to the young girl Foll.

Throughout the story, Chastille undergoes significant personal development. She moves from being a dogmatic holy knight to an independent thinker who challenges the corrupt and rigid structures of the Church. She learns to reconcile her formidable public persona with her clumsy private self, finding a balance between her duties and her personal feelings. A notable aspect of her development is her acceptance of her own unrequited love for Zagan, which paradoxically allows her to gain strength and clarity rather than dwelling in sorrow. Later in the story, it is confirmed that she is a grigori, an artificial race created by the Seraphs, which adds another layer to her identity and origins.

Regarding her notable abilities, Chastille is recognized as the fastest Archangel, capable of launching countless slashes at speeds invisible to the naked eye. Her primary power is derived from the Sacred Sword Azrael, which wields the element of light. By uttering the trigger word Shine, she can release a blinding burst of light called the Light of Purification to cut down her foes or simply blind them to gain an advantage. Her ultimate technique is the Angelic Confession, the final form of the Sacred Sword, which manifests as a knight clad in pure white armor wielding a shield and a slender sword. Despite her immense combat prowess, which allows her to rival even an Archdemon, she is famously inept at daily tasks such as cooking, which has been described as so bad that spirits might perish from it.
