Description
Greed is a sentient, magical sword and a central figure in the story, serving as the primary companion and weapon to the protagonist, Fate Graphite. The sword is a Weapon of Mortal Sin, an ancient artifact that embodies the sin of Greed, and is one of several such weapons in the world. Originally, Greed was a human and was among the first generation of individuals to become such a weapon, a transformation that occurred over four thousand years before the events of the narrative. This immense age grants him a vast, though not always freely shared, well of experience and knowledge.
In its default form, Greed appears as a seemingly aged and neglected sword. Its blade looks rusted and greasy, and its hilt is shaped roughly like a cross. It was discovered by Fate discarded and covered in dust and oil within a barrel of cheap, low-quality weapons at a stall. While his true form is that of a sword, Greed can also manifest a human form, which features fiery red hair and earrings, and is marked with tattoos of the Galian people. The sword commonly presents itself as male and uses male pronouns, although it has stated that as an inanimate object, it does not possess a true gender.
Greed possesses a confident and boastful personality, often displaying a high level of self-assurance. He acts as a guide and mentor to Fate, especially in combat, where he provides tactical advice and explains the functionalities of his own various forms. He is notably helpful and supportive of his wielder. However, this support is frequently accompanied by a tendency to make sarcastic remarks or poke fun at Fate, providing occasional moments of comic relief. For instance, Greed might make an inappropriate but humorous comment about a character like Roxy Hart smelling nice, much to Fate's embarrassment. He is also pragmatic, offering sensible advice in social situations, such as reminding Fate to maintain a disguise or suggesting a course of action like pretending to be a couple to avoid detection. Despite his talkative nature and willingness to engage in banter, Greed can be reserved when it comes to topics concerning his own mysterious past, only sparingly offering details.
Greed’s primary motivation is tied to his symbiotic relationship with Fate. He requires a wielder who can activate and utilize his powers, and his abilities are fueled by the stats consumed through Fate’s own skill, Gluttony. The two are remarkably compatible, as both possess skills that involve consumption and are rejected by mainstream society. Greed seems to have been waiting for someone like Fate to come along. As the story progresses, Greed develops alongside Fate, unlocking new levels of power as Fate meets the stat requirements. His development is directly linked to the growth of his wielder, making their partnership essential for facing increasingly powerful threats.
The central and most important relationship for Greed is with Fate Graphite. Fate discovers him in a pile of junk weapons and purchases him, forming an immediate bond. They are perfect partners, as Fate’s Gluttony skill absorbs the attributes of slain enemies, a portion of which is then consumed by Greed to unlock his own transformative abilities. Greed provides Fate with the means to channel his overwhelming power effectively, while Fate provides Greed with the sustenance he needs to evolve. Beyond being a weapon, Greed serves as a confidant and advisor, offering critical information about the nature of Fate's Gluttony skill and helping him navigate dangerous situations. He is essentially the deuteragonist of the story, as integral to the plot as Fate himself.
Greed’s most notable ability is his capacity to transform into different weapon forms, each possessing unique attributes and powerful secret techniques. Unlocking these forms requires the consumption of a percentage of the user’s stats, with the cost escalating dramatically for each new level. These forms and their respective secret techniques include the First Level, a bow that fires homing energy arrows and can cast spells with homing properties; its secret technique, Bloody Ptarmigan, fires a massive laser-like beam at the cost of ten percent of the user's stats. The Second Level is a scythe that can cut through skill-created phenomena; its secret technique, Deadly Inferno, infuses the blade with a curse that rots a target's magical core, capable of killing immortal beings at the cost of twenty percent of the user's stats. The Third Level is a shield offering complete protection; its secret technique, Reflection Fortress, absorbs an attack and returns it multiplied. The Fourth Level is a stave that can emit both offensive black flames and restorative white flames; its secret technique, Twilight Healing, can cure any wound or illness at the cost of forty percent of the user's stats but cannot resurrect the dead. The Fifth Level is gauntlets that control up to ten black threads for binding and slicing; its secret technique, Dimension Destruction, allows the threads to cut through space itself. The Sixth Level is a spear of mass destruction; its secret technique, Revolt Brionac, can erase existence and destroy even indestructible objects. Finally, the Truest Form is Level Zero, a set of dual blades whose secret technique, Infinity Divide, allows for unavoidable and unceasing heavy strikes.
