Description
Nicolaus Spertus is a high-ranking statesman of the Holy Empire of Lubelius and serves as the de facto highest authority of the Western Holy Church, holding the position of cardinal. His background places him as a key political figure within the church's hierarchy, though his true loyalties are far more personal than his official role suggests.

In terms of personality, Nicolaus is described as an utterly cold and calculating individual, often called a "Devil with a Saint's mask" by those who know him. He possesses a cruel and ruthless intellect, capable of analyzing any situation without emotion and acting without hesitation. Despite this chilling exterior, he is capable of deep attachment, but this attachment is directed almost exclusively toward one person: Hinata Sakaguchi. His faith in the goddess Luminous is little more than a public facade; in truth, he is a heretic who uses the church's structure and the goddess's name solely as a means to remain close to Hinata. He holds no genuine regard for anyone else, including the deity he claims to worship.

His primary motivation is his unwavering devotion to Hinata Sakaguchi. Everything he does within the church and in political matters is ultimately aimed at serving her will and protecting her interests. He is willing to execute her orders without question and has shown genuine worry for her safety, even preparing her breakfast on occasion.

In the story, Nicolaus serves as a supporting figure within the Holy Empire, acting as a political strategist and the right hand of Louis Valentin. He participates in high-level meetings and decision-making, including those concerning the demon lord Rimuru Tempest. He took part in discussions with Hinata and the Ten Great Saints after Rimuru's evolution and the defeat of Falmuth, where they received a forged message about Rimuru seeking to challenge Hinata. He also warned Hinata about the dangers of confronting Rimuru directly.

His key relationships center on Hinata Sakaguchi, to whom he is intensely loyal. He also interacts with the Ten Great Saints and other members of the church hierarchy. He grew suspicious of the Luminaries and the Three Battlesages, indicating a degree of distrust toward those around him.

Regarding development, Nicolaus remains a figure defined by his unwavering fixation on Hinata. His cold, calculating nature and heretical use of the church for his own ends show little change, as his character is built around this singular devotion rather than a transformative arc.

His notable abilities are largely political and intellectual rather than combative. He is a master strategist and manipulator, able to orchestrate events from behind the scenes. He also possesses some form of telepathic communication, as he was able to contact Hinata remotely before the connection was blocked. While he is not a frontline fighter, his mind and political influence make him a significant figure within the power structures of the Holy Empire.
