Description
The character known as Earth is the creator of the Earth and a powerful wizard who lives deep beneath the planet's surface. He appears in the form of an old man with long white hair and a long beard, embodying an ancient and wise archetype. His purpose is to protect the world he created from any existential threat, making him a guardian deity-like figure.
Earth's personality is defined by his wisdom and strategic thinking. When confronted with the invasion plans of the alien Goa, he does not engage in direct combat but instead acts as a commander and creator, assessing the threat and creating the necessary warriors to counter it. He is compassionate and understands the emotional needs of his creations, as demonstrated when Magma expresses a desire to have a child. Earth fulfills this wish by creating Gam, a rocket-boy modeled after the human boy Mamoru Murakami, thereby completing Magma and Mol's family unit. His primary motivation is the preservation of Earth and the defeat of Goa, who aims to add the planet to his collection of conquered worlds. He is portrayed as a being of pure good, dedicated to foiling the ambitions of the interstellar conqueror.
In the story, Earth serves as the mission control and benefactor for the heroes. He does not typically participate in the physical battles against Goa's monsters. Instead, his role is to create and empower the champions who do. He forges Ambassador Magma, a golden living giant, and Mol, a human-sized rocket-woman, from living metal, giving them the abilities to transform into rockets and fight against the invasion. Recognizing the involvement of the Murakami family, particularly the young boy Mamoru, Earth creates a special whistle and gives it to the child. When blown once, it summons Gam; twice, it summons Mol; and three times, it summons Magma, providing a crucial link between the human world and his super-powered guardians.
Earth has several key relationships that drive the narrative. He is the creator and father figure to Magma and Mol, who act as his primary agents. He creates Gam as a son for them, forming a family unit of protectors. He holds a meaningful relationship with Mamoru Murakami, not only giving him the summoning whistle but also using his likeness to create Gam, which establishes a symbolic bond between the human family and the rocket family. Earth is the direct opposition to the main antagonist, Goa, the alien invader. In the English dubbed version of the series, known as The Space Giants, the character of Earth is renamed to Methusan or Methuselah.
Regarding character development, Earth remains a largely static figure throughout the narrative. He is not a character who learns or changes but rather an established force of wisdom and creation. His primary arc consists of recognizing the Goa threat, creating his champions to meet it, and then providing them with the tools and strategies needed to succeed. His development is less about personal change and more about the extension of his will through Magma, Mol, and Gam.
Earth possesses notable abilities that set him apart from the other characters. His primary power is creation; he can forge living, sentient beings from metal who possess incredible superpowers and the ability to transform into rocket ships. He also has the mystical ability to create a duplicate of a human boy, Gam, who is a living rocket-person. Additionally, Earth crafted a special high-frequency whistle with seemingly magical properties that can summon his creations across great distances instantaneously. Unlike his creations, he does not participate in physical combat, preferring to act from his hidden sanctum deep within the Earth.
