Description
Sayuri Chiba is the daughter of Shusaku Chiba, the founder and master of the Chiba Dojo in Edo, where she lives with her family. Her father is the creator of the Hokushin Ittō-ryū sword style and a famous swordsman in the region.

As a capable martial artist, Sayuri has considerable skill with the sword and specializes in the use of the naginata, a traditional Japanese pole weapon. Beyond her training, she is actively involved in the daily operations and maintenance of the dojo, contributing to both its domestic and martial functions.

Sayuri’s personality is defined by her consistent compassion and sympathy, especially toward Suzunosuke Akado, a young swordsman who comes to train at her father’s school. She watches over his development with a warm and caring perspective, offering him encouragement during his initial struggles with difficult chores and hostility from other students. Her support is not merely passive; she takes practical actions to help him, such as accompanying him on errands and outings, including a trip to the Asakusa Kannon temple. Her motivations are closely tied to upholding the principles of her family’s dojo and ensuring the well-being of its members.

Within the story’s conflict, Sayuri is drawn into the battles against adversarial groups that threaten the Chiba family and the Edo Shogunate. During her outings with Suzunosuke, she directly engages in combat with rival gangs, such as the Monotayu gang, demonstrating her ability to defend herself and her allies. One of her key relationships is with Rainoshin Tatsumaki, a talented senior disciple at the dojo whose initial animosity toward Suzunosuke creates tension. After Rainoshin is defeated and excommunicated, he later allies with the Kimento, an evil organization that plots to overthrow the government, which further entangles Sayuri in the escalating dangers facing the dojo.

Her important relationships also include her father, Shusaku, as well as her mother, who is mentioned within the context of the household. In terms of development, while she begins as a supportive figure within the dojo, her involvement in external confrontations grows as the threats from groups like the Kimento become more direct. Her notable ability is her proficiency with the naginata, which, combined with her swordsmanship, establishes her as a formidable fighter who actively contributes to the protection of her home and the pursuit of justice.
