Description
Ikumi Kaidō is a character from the anime series whose quiet and reserved demeanor often sets him apart from his peers. Initially introduced as a classmate of the main protagonist, he is a boy with purple hair and a distinctive hairstyle that covers part of his face, frequently seen with his hands in his pockets. His personality is defined by a profound taciturnity and a deliberate emotional distance from others. This behavior stems from his deep-seated belief that forming close bonds is futile, as he is convinced he will eventually have to leave and does not want anyone to mourn for him. This worldview is directly challenged by a friend who believes in the value of connections, regardless of the potential for loss.
The truth behind his isolation is revealed to be his origin as a biological weapon known as an Arma. Created on the Red Planet as a genetically altered clone to support a soldato division, he possesses enhanced telekinetic powers. As an infant, he was brought to Earth aboard the spaceship J-Ark after his home planet was mechanized. He was discovered and raised by an elderly woman he calls Mother, growing up believing he was an ordinary human while instinctively hiding his true nature and abilities. His powers begin to surface more openly when he unconsciously deflects attacks, eventually leading to his full awakening during a catastrophic event where his memory lock is released, and he appears to fall to his death to pursue his true mission.
His primary motivation shifts from passive isolation to active duty as a Warrior of Abel. Upon awakening, he dedicates himself to fighting against the Machine Primevals, using his unique abilities to purify Zonderians and revert them to their original states. Unlike the main character, Ikumi possesses the specific capability to purify Zonderians, making him a crucial asset in the conflict. In the story, he serves as a powerful ally who often operates from the shadows or alongside the soldato unit J-Ark and its pilot, Soldato J, with whom he shares a deep, predestined bond. He also acts as a foil and eventual partner to his classmate, who shares a similar origin as a clone, but who embraces his human connections more openly.
Key relationships define his journey. His bond with his adoptive mother is profoundly important; the memory of her love remains with him, and the Machine Primeval that takes her form becomes a personal adversary. His connection with Soldato J, his designated partner, is central to his combat role, and he holds a specific authority, such as issuing a freeze command on J-Jewels to neutralize their power if necessary. His relationship with his human friend progresses from a distant classmate to a trusted comrade who understands his burdens. Later in the narrative, he also develops connections with other allies, including a girl who develops feelings for him after he saves her, and a family in Australia who cares for him during a period of memory loss.
Over the course of the series and its后续 installments, Ikumi undergoes significant development. Starting as a closed-off child faking his own death to escape his former life, he grows into a more expressive individual. Years later, he becomes the vice-captain of a mobile corps, piloting a mechanoid alongside his now closer friend, with whom he communicates on a first-name basis, a stark contrast to his earlier reticence. He physically matures as well, growing notably taller, and his hairstyle changes, symbolizing his evolution. His motivations also deepen, shifting from fulfilling a programmed purpose to a personal desire to rescue lost comrades and protect his found family.
His notable abilities are extensive and primarily telekinetic. He can generate powerful defensive barriers and energy slashes from his hands capable of cutting through enemy weaponry. When his powers are fully manifested, his body glows red and he sprouts wings of light that allow him to fly and survive in the vacuum of space. His unique purification ability allows him to revert Zonderians to their original human forms, a power his counterpart does not initially possess. In later storylines, he demonstrates the ability to perform combination techniques, further showcasing his growth as a warrior and his strengthened partnership with his childhood friend.
