Description
Rababou, also written Rababō, is a small star-world creature who serves as the attendant of Comet-san in the anime Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-san. He comes from a star world and is forcibly sent by Higenoshita to assist Comet in her mission of finding the missing prince of the Tambourine Star World, a search guided by the clue that the prince is someone whose eyes hold a special sparkle. In appearance, Rababou is round and dog-like, with a star-shaped tip on his tail, and he can easily be mistaken for a cute toy. He also speaks with a distinctive habit of ending his sentences with the syllable "bo." When he is not out in the world, he stays hidden inside Comet's Twinkle Star.
Despite his cuddly looks, Rababou has a serious and scolding personality. He constantly nags Comet to stay focused on her task, while Comet would much rather go out and have fun. He often orders his princess around, but he genuinely cares for her both as a friend and as a princess, and he is one of the few beings in whom Comet can confide her feelings. His main motivation is a strong sense of duty toward the mission he was given, and he takes his role as Comet's supervisor and helper seriously.
Over the course of the story, Rababou becomes romantically involved with Rabapyon, the star-world pet of Spica, an older star traveler who is also Comet's aunt. After falling in love, Rababou shifts from being strictly serious to being largely absorbed in romance. This relationship has an important effect on the story, because the affection between the two pets generates a new magical energy called love power. When Rababou is under the influence of this love power and enters Comet's pendant, the pendant changes from a star shape into a heart shape, allowing Comet to take on a more powerful love-powered form in the latter half of the series. Rababou also has a counterpart among the rival princess Meteor's entourage, the round bird companion Mook.
As for abilities, Rababou's star-tipped tail acts as a sensor that can detect twinkles, meaning the radiance or sparkle carried by certain people, which is directly useful in the search for the prince. He can also inflate his head into a balloon-like shape to fly, and he is very helpful for collecting star power. His combination of a sharp detection sense, flight, and his close bond with Comet make him a valuable companion even though the two often disagree about how the mission should be carried out.
