Description
Mantis is a Maximal and a member of the Insectrons, a subgroup of independently minded warriors who operate on the planet Gaia during the conflict between the Maximals and Predacons. He transforms into a praying mantis, and his beast mode grants him a set of scythe-like forelimbs that he uses for close-quarters combat. In both modes, he is equipped with pressure-launched discs known as Twin Discs, which he can control telekinetically in mid-flight, making him a formidable ranged fighter as well.

Of all the Insectrons, Mantis is the most hostile and short-tempered. He values peace and quiet above almost everything else and becomes violently enraged when his solitude is disturbed. His temper is so intense that even his fellow Insectrons know to keep their distance, and he often retreats to isolated locations far from his teammates to rest. This deeply territorial nature defines his initial interactions with the Maximals: when a Predacon bombing run wakes him from his slumber in ancient ruins, he attacks the nearby Maximals without hesitation and nearly defeats Lio Convoy before being subdued by Apache. Despite Lio Convoy later saving his life, Mantis refuses any offer of friendship and simply warns that they will meet again.

His motivations are primarily driven by a desire for undisturbed isolation, but he also possesses a strong sense of independence. He is not easily swayed by authority or external loyalties. When the Predacon Starscream tricks the Insectrons into believing the Maximals are evil, Mantis investigates the claim himself by researching a data disc. He later proves willing to cooperate with the Maximals when circumstances force a common enemy. After a disastrous oil party orchestrated by Starscream leads to a drunken brawl among the Insectrons, Mantis arrives with Scissor Boy and the Maximals to break up the fight, and the two groups eventually make peace.

Throughout the series, Mantis’s relationships with his fellow Insectrons are pragmatic rather than warm. He gives blunt, self-centered advice to Bigmos, telling him to ignore past debts and future consequences and simply do what feels right in the moment—advice that paradoxically helps Bigmos resolve his own moral dilemma. He also maintains a long-standing rivalry with the Predacon Autolauncher, who seeks to prove himself the superior disc master. Mantis rarely seeks leadership but does participate in joint missions, acting as a recon scout for Lio Convoy and joining the final assault on the Nemesis. However, he remains aloof; during a mass Predacon offensive, he stays in his lair, furious at the disturbance to his privacy, only joining the battle when directly needed.

Development in the cartoon is subtle: Mantis never becomes warm or talkative, but he does shift from outright hostility to a grudging, reliable ally. His initial distrust of the Maximals gives way to cooperation, though he never fully integrates into their ranks. His defining traits—volatile temper, love of solitude, and deadly combat ability—remain constant, but he proves capable of setting aside personal grievances when the larger conflict demands it.

Notable abilities include his telekinetic disc control, which allows him to curve his projectiles around obstacles and strike targets with precision, and his scythe-like claws, which he uses to slice through opponents in close combat. His ninja-like function is reflected in his stealthy, independent approach and his ability to move silently through ruins and wilderness. Despite his explosive anger, he is also a capable strategist when calm, as shown when he correctly deduces that Starscream’s offer of oil is a trap and later helps coordinate reconnaissance.
