Description
Powerhug, called Pawāhaggu in Japanese, is a Maximal-allied Insectron in Beast Wars II Chō Seimeitai Transformers who transforms into a pill bug. He is one of the Insectrons, a group of former mercenaries who grew tired of war and wandered the galaxy in search of a peaceful existence. Along the way they came into conflict with the Autorollers, a Predacon mercenary team that bullied others without any sense of fair play, and Powerhug in particular developed a bitter grudge after a past encounter with the Autoroller Autocrusher. The Insectrons eventually settled on the planet Gaia, where they lived as fierce territorial guardians of their lands in the South Continent.

In personality, Powerhug is brusque and rough-and-tumble, the kind of fighter who lets his fists do the talking, yet he is not a bully and is in fact a genuinely kind individual. He is a dedicated martial artist who believes strongly in fair play and treats combat like a refereed wrestling match, never striking an opponent who has been knocked down and always allowing the other side the chance to get back up and continue. He is also remarkably straightforward, always speaking the truth even when it is uncomfortable, and he speaks with a Kyushu dialect. His main flaw is clumsiness, particularly in his pill bug beast mode, since he prefers to travel by rolling but never mastered how to stop, so he frequently flattens friends and enemies alike entirely by accident.

His motivations center on finding and keeping peace, defending the territory the Insectrons claimed on Gaia, and settling his old score with the Autorollers. When the Maximals and Predacons arrive on the planet, the Insectrons at first see both groups as intruders. The Predacon Starscream manipulates them into believing the Maximals are their true enemies, which leads Powerhug into a fight with the aggressive Maximal Bighorn. Powerhug uses his judo skills to redirect Bighorn's charges, and during the duel Bighorn notices that Powerhug never presses his advantage when his opponent is on the ground, instead waiting honorably for him to rise. The two end up evenly matched at two throws apiece, and this display of sportsmanship helps the Maximals realize the Insectrons are not inherently hostile.

The misunderstanding is fully resolved after Starscream lures the Insectrons to Mikazuki Island with the promise of an oil party. The super-refined oil leaves the Insectrons drunk and brawling, with Powerhug among the worst affected, firing off his guns wildly. The Maximals intervene, and the two groups end up joining forces against a similarly intoxicated Galvatron, after which the Insectrons and Maximals make peace. Later, when Scissor Boy and Tasmania Kid are captured by the Autorollers, Powerhug and Drill Nuts attempt a rescue by starting a landslide, confident their comrades can dodge the rocks, but the plan backfires and the whole group ends up at the feet of Megastorm and his warship. The other Maximals arrive as reinforcements, and together they drive off the Predacons, with Powerhug and Drill Nuts apologizing for ruining the ambush.

Within his team, Powerhug is especially close to Drill Nuts and Scissor Boy, and he fights alongside his fellow Insectrons Bigmos, Tonbot, and Mantis. His relationship with Bighorn develops from initial hostility into a respectful, sportsmanlike rivalry. As the conflict on Gaia escalates, Powerhug becomes a dependable ally of Lio Convoy's Maximals, serving as recon alongside the other Insectrons and reporting enemy movements, and he helps them construct a launching platform so that Lio Convoy's crew can reach the artificial planet Nemesis in space and stop it from draining Gaia's Angolmois Energy.

In combat, Powerhug is a skilled judo practitioner who uses an opponent's momentum and strength against them, and his body is covered by an incredibly durable shell. His signature techniques include the Hug Hell Wheel, in which he curls into a ball and delivers a powerful body blow while rolling, and the crushing Power Hug, which pins his enemies. In beast mode his fangs and tail can function as alloy cutters. Over the course of the story he grows from a distrustful outsider into a loyal and honorable fighter who contributes meaningfully to the final battle to protect Gaia.
