Description
Coelagon is a character from the Beast Wars II branch of the Transformers franchise, a member of a rogue subgroup known as the Seacon Space Pirates who are aligned with the Predacon faction. His name is a reference to the coelacanth, an ancient fish species, which directly ties to his advanced age and his beast mode. He is one of the oldest living Transformers of his era, with a rumored age exceeding 80,000 years, placing his origins well back into the age of the original Autobot and Decepticon conflict.

Coelagon transforms into a cybernetic coelacanth, a large, four-legged predatory fish. In this form, his primary attack is named the Blizzard of Scales, which unleashes a wave of razor-sharp scales upon his enemies. His nominal role in the Seacon team is to combine with his fellow members Halfshell, Terrormander, Scylla, Sea Phantom, and Dírge to form the giant warrior God Neptune. When forming this combination, Coelagon typically serves as God Neptune's left arm.

Personality-wise, Coelagon is defined by his extreme age and the quirks that come with it. He is a curmudgeonly and lethargic individual who is almost perpetually napping. Even in the midst of dangerous situations or combat, he is frequently seen dozing, preferring a quiet rest over the chaos of battle. He is not a particularly powerful warrior, excelling more as an observer and advisor than a front-line fighter.

In this advisory role, he claims to possess a vast wealth of knowledge, accumulated over his millennia of existence. He acts as the Seacons' source of information, particularly regarding legends, treasure, and profitable locations across the galaxy. However, a defining aspect of his character is that a disturbingly high percentage of the information he provides is either wildly exaggerated, outdated, or completely false. It is unclear whether this is due to his memory circuits failing with age or if he simply received incorrect information centuries prior. Regardless, his crewmates, including the leader Halfshell, treat him with respect and seldom question his tall tales to his face. Despite his frequent inaccuracies, he is also the source of at least one critical truth: the legend of the Angolmois Energy capsules hidden on the planet Gaia, which serves as a major motivating factor for the Seacons' arrival on that world.

In the Beast Wars II anime, Coelagon arrives on Gaia with the other Seacons aboard their starship, the Photon Sailer. True to form, he is often shown waking from a nap to share some piece of advice before returning to sleep. He participates in the Seacons' confrontations with the Maximals, led by Lio Convoy, but is generally depicted as a passive combatant, often observing fights from a distance until he is needed to form God Neptune. In one notable instance, he faced the Maximal Bighorn in single combat as part of a larger scheme, though his lack of enthusiasm for the fight is apparent.

His key relationships are entirely within the Seacon crew. He appears to be close with Halfshell, the captain, offering him comfort and counsel. He also indulges the antics of the younger members, such as the love-struck Scylla, though he often just watches the chaos unfold rather than intervene. His interactions with the primary antagonists, Galvatron and his Predacons, are strictly transactional; the Seacons are independent space pirates who work for profit, not loyalty, until they are later brainwashed by Galvatron's artificial planet, Nemesis.

Coelagon undergoes a minor but significant development late in the series. When the Seacons are drawn into the void of space and brainwashed by the Nemesis, they become aggressive servants of Galvatron, serving as the first line of defense for his artificial planet. In this state, Coelagon and his team fight the Maximals with an uncharacteristic ferocity. However, after being defeated by the combined Magnaboss and regaining consciousness, he and the other Seacons are freed from the evil influence. Regaining their senses, they express remorse and choose to part ways with the Maximals on peaceful terms, declaring a nearby asteroid to be their new ship and sailing off into space. This arc provides a rare moment of clarity and self-determination for the normally sleepy and unreliable old pirate.
