Description
Big Mos is the leader of the Insectron forces, a subgroup of Maximals introduced in the Japanese animated series Beast Wars II. His name is derived from "mosquito," the insect he transforms into, though the original Japanese katakana leaves a slight ambiguity that has led to a rare alternative reading of "Big Moth".
The character's background is rooted in a desire to escape conflict. After many years of war on the planet Cybertron, Big Mos chose to leave his homeworld with a group of like-minded friends to search the galaxy for a safe haven away from the fighting. This quest for peace ultimately led the Insectrons to settle in the Antarctic region of the planet Gaea, where they were living quietly before the events of the series.
Big Mos is characterized as a very solemn and honorable warrior who deeply desires peace. He is described as easily the most level-headed member of the Insectrons, a trait that serves him well in his role as their leader. A significant part of his honor code stems from a past battle on Cybertron against an Autoroller named Autostinger. Big Mos was defeated and left at his enemy's mercy, but instead of finishing him off, Autostinger granted him mercy and allowed him to live. As a result, Big Mos still owes a debt of gratitude to his former foe.
In the story of Beast Wars II, Big Mos and his Insectrons initially keep to themselves. However, they are tricked into battling the Maximal protagonists by the deceptive Predacon, Starscream, who provides them with false information making the Maximals appear to be enemies. Once this deception is uncovered, Big Mos and his forces realize the truth and subsequently ally themselves with the Maximals against the common Predacon threat.
Big Mos possesses several notable abilities. He is a triple-changer, meaning he has more than the standard two modes. His primary alternate mode is an organic mosquito, in which he is a quick and agile flyer who is difficult to lock onto as a target. His third mode is a fearsome antlion-like form, sometimes referred to as his "Hell Scissor" mode. In either insect-based form, his primary weapon is a set of needle missiles that he fires from his mouth, which are powerful enough to pierce even the toughest metal alloys. His official tech spec numbers rate his firepower at a maximum of 10, with strength, intelligence, speed, courage, and skill all rated at 9. A peculiar and less combat-oriented characteristic is his noted weakness for tomato juice, which he prefers to oil and which can even be used to bait him.
