Description
Pia Marco is the protagonist of the anime Shin Bikkuriman and the central figure of its adventure. He is the child of Head Rococo and Satan Maria, the legendary heroes who brought the earlier war between angels and demons to an end, though he grows up without knowing this heritage. For most of his early life he believes he is simply an omamori, one of the protective charm beings living peacefully in the Next World alongside angels and demons. In truth he is a Jidai, a new kind of being born from the reconciliation of angels and demons and meant to carry the future of the world. During a journey into the past, he meets Maria shortly after her transformation into an angel, and the two share a moment of emotional connection without realizing they are mother and son; as he grows older, his appearance is said to carry a faint resemblance to her.
In personality, Pia Marco is a gluttonous and easygoing boy with a particular fondness for manju buns. He often behaves in a naturally absent-minded way, yet he is also quick-witted and capable of thinking on his feet when the situation demands it. He is sociable, open, and completely without guile, and his pure and innocent nature leads both allies and former enemies to grow fond of him. He also possesses remarkable physical strength and can lift enormous boulders without difficulty. When he concentrates his power, his usually gentle expression gives way to the sharp, composed eyes of a serious fighter.
Marco's journey begins almost by accident. He slips into the forbidden Tower of Time and witnesses a vision of the Next World falling into ruin. Guided by the mysterious girl Putchy Orin, and joined by the self-styled righteous angel Berry Oz and the treasure-obsessed Dio Cocky as companions, he sets out to gather the twelve Saint Jewels, sacred stones said to hold the power to save the Next World from destruction. As the quest progresses, the jewels are absorbed into the belt he wears, and his strength grows with each one.
His role in the story develops steadily as he faces increasingly powerful threats. After a crushing defeat at the hands of Dark Matter, he travels to the Saint Land, where the divine figures Nadia and Media help him confront and reevaluate his own desires through training. When the Next World stands at the brink of collapse, he awakens to his true purpose and transforms into Sun Marco, suddenly growing into a tall and handsome young man with a distinctly heroic presence. Even in this mature form, his innocent personality remains unchanged. Later, amid the three-sided conflict involving the forces of Ezfito and Dark Matter, he achieves the even greater form of Alexand Marco. In the final episode, united with all twelve Saint Jewels, he plays the decisive role in bringing about a truly peaceful world known as the New Galaxy.
Pia Marco's most important relationships are formed during this journey. His bond with Putchy Orin blossoms into mutual love, and when he loses his memories after being cast into the dimensional world created by Dark Matter, her affection helps him recover them. With Berry Oz and Dio Cocky he shares a friendship marked by bickering and cooperation, and even his rivalry with Saikuros, who begins as an enemy, deepens into a genuine connection; this makes it all the more difficult when Marco must oppose his friend after becoming Sun Marco. His openness and sincerity allow him to build trust across the lines of battle, reflecting the theme of reconciliation that defines the world that emerges around him.
