Description
Mako Urashima is the main protagonist of the anime Maco the Mermaid. She is a fifteen-year-old mermaid princess and the youngest daughter of the Dragon King, the ruler of the sea world. As a young mermaid, Mako is filled with curiosity about the human world, which she is forbidden to visit by her father. During a stormy night, she disobeys this rule and rises to the surface, where she sees a cruise ship and becomes captivated by a young man named Akira Shigeno. When a tsunami wrecks the ship, she rescues Akira and brings him to shore, falling in love with him in the process. Determined to be with him, Mako seeks out the Witch of the Sea, who transforms her into a human. After washing ashore and pretending to be an amnesiac orphan, she is eventually adopted by an elderly man named Mr. Urashima and begins her new life in Yokohama under the human name Mako Urashima. She enrolls at Karatachi Academy, where she faces the everyday challenges of school, makes friends, and deals with rivals such as the wealthy Tomiko Tomita. Mako retains a magical connection to her sea heritage through a pendant called the Mermaid’s Life, which grants her special powers and serves as a link to her family. She is kind-hearted, brave, and willing to help others, often using her magic to resolve problems or teach important lessons. Throughout the series, Mako grows from a naïve, impulsive princess into a more mature young woman who learns to navigate both the human and undersea worlds. Her love for Akira remains a central motivation, but she also develops deep bonds with her adoptive father, her human friends, and her biological family, particularly her father the Dragon King, who eventually comes to understand her choices. Mako’s journey highlights themes of forbidden love, self-discovery, and the blending of two worlds.
