TV-Series
Description
One-Eyed Jack is a supporting character in the anime Ōkami Shōnen Ken. He is a full-grown wolf and a member of the wolf pack that lives in the jungle where the story takes place. He is distinguished by his single functioning eye, which is the feature that gives him his name, though the story does not dwell on the cause of his injury.
In personality, he is described as the dashing, good-looking member of the wolf group, carrying himself with a certain pride and presence among his companions. He is a dependable figure within the pack, standing alongside characters such as the elder wolf Boss as one of the mature wolves who watch over the younger members. Despite his composed exterior, his initial attitude toward the protagonist Ken is hostile. Because Ken is a human being living among wolves, Jack dislikes him and views him as an outsider who does not belong in the pack.
His motivations are rooted in loyalty to his fellow wolves and a personal sense of honor. His early distrust of Ken comes from protecting what he sees as the natural order of the pack. This changes when Ken saves Jack's life. Later, when Ken is bitten by a poisonous snake, Jack is presented with the opportunity to let the boy die, but he instead chooses to return the favor and save Ken. That decision marks a turning point in his character, as the mutual act of saving each other forms the basis of a genuine friendship.
In the story, Jack serves as a supporting wolf ally. He is one of the companions who keep watch over Ken and help him in his efforts to defend the jungle and its animals from predators, human intruders, and other dangers. His relationship with Ken develops from suspicion and antagonism into trust and camaraderie, and the two come to fight side by side. He also shares ties with the rest of the wolf clan, including the elder Boss, the wolf Black, and the young cubs of the pack, and he plays a part in the pack gradually coming to accept Ken as a brave member of their group.
In terms of development, Jack undergoes a clear change over the course of the series. He begins as a skeptical wolf who resents Ken's presence, but through Ken's selfless act and his own decision to repay that kindness, he becomes one of Ken's most reliable allies. His arc shows a stubborn, proud nature giving way to respect and friendship.
As for abilities, Jack possesses the natural strengths of a mature wolf, including sharp senses, speed, agility, and combat instincts. He is a capable fighter within the pack and contributes to its confrontations with large predators such as bears and tigers, as well as with hostile humans. His specific individual feats are not given much detailed attention, but he is consistently presented as a strong and dependable presence in the group's adventures.
