Description
Jona Macka is a character from the anime Toward the Terra, known as Jonah Matsuka or Jonah Makka in some adaptations. His name is sometimes written as "Makka" due to a common misreading of the Japanese characters in his original name. He is a human who secretly possesses the psychic powers of a Mu, a race of espers hunted by humanity's ruling super-computer, known as Mother.
In his youth, Jona Macka's telepathic abilities first manifested while he was traveling to an educational station. To survive, he deliberately performed poorly in his studies and pretended to be a troublesome student, a clever ruse that allowed him to evade detection by the omnipresent Mother. He was eventually assigned to the remote Soleid base, a posting he welcomed as it offered a chance to live in relative peace and obscurity, far from the prying eyes of the authorities.
His quiet existence changed dramatically with the arrival of Keith Anyan, a prodigious Elite soldier with whom he was stationed. Jona Macka develops an unwavering and deep-seated loyalty to Keith. As Keith's assistant, he is a calm and composed presence, though he is not afraid to act on his convictions. On a mission to investigate strange occurrences in the Sylvester system, Keith is shot down on a planet and presumed dead by his crew. In a decisive act of loyalty, Jona Macka attempts to stop the panicked crew from abandoning him, but he is overpowered by the others.
This incident defines his role in the story, cementing his position as Keith's steadfast supporter. Unlike many other Mu who join the collective fight for freedom on the planet Terra, Jona Macka's journey is intrinsically tied to Keith Anyan, serving as a bridge between the world of the humans and the hunted espers. His motivations are consistently personal, driven by his allegiance to an individual rather than to a larger political ideology.
Jona Macka's primary ability is telepathy, the power to read the minds of others. He initially considered this gift to be merely a strange or unique quirk rather than something extraordinary. While this power is central to his identity as a Mu, it is not always the focus of his actions, which are more often defined by his courage and personal loyalty. He ages and matures over the course of the narrative, appearing as a young man of seventeen and later as a thirty-nine-year-old, showing his long-term commitment and presence throughout the story's multi-year timeline.
