Description
Mr. Noracula first appears in the 1973 anime Microid S as Manabu's homeroom teacher. His name is a play on the word Dracula, though no clear reason exists for the No portion. He has a distinctive appearance with a high-peaked, almost horn-like hairdo and a small, pointy moustache, giving him a devilish look that matches his personality. He is not a true villain but rather the embodiment of a vulgar, survival of the fittest type of teacher who preys on weaker students in his class, a popular trope in 1970s and 1980s media. His role in the series is primarily as a quirky authority figure at Manabu's school, providing comic relief and representing the harsh, bullying side of the educational system. He interacts with Manabu and sometimes the three Microid heroes, Yanma, Ageha, and Mamezo, who once play a prank on him during a home visit. His motivations are not deeply explored; he acts as a self-serving and domineering instructor rather than a character with a larger arc. Within Microid S itself, his development is minimal, as he remains a static comic-relief side character. However, as part of Osamu Tezuka's Star System, Noracula went on to appear in several other works, most notably as a military instructor in the semi-autobiographical Paper Fortress, reflecting Tezuka's own wartime experiences as a student, as well as roles in Black Jack, The Rainbow Parakeet, and as a demon-piano salesman in Say Hello to Bookila. His notable abilities are not superhuman; his power lies in his authority as a teacher and his intimidating, aggressive demeanor toward his students.
