Description
Hatabō, a recurring character from the Osomatsu-kun series, is immediately recognizable by the small Hinomaru flag that protrudes from the top of his skull. His name, which translates to "flag boy," was selected by readers of Shonen Sunday magazine. While the flag is usually the Japanese national flag, it has appeared in other forms depending on the story's context, such as a solid red flag in stories published for a Communist newspaper, the flags of other nations, or even a skull and crossbones when he adopts an assassin persona. His visual design is rounded out by a shaggy, kappa-like bowlcut haircut, a single bucktooth, and vertical lines beneath his nose that suggest a perpetually runny nose with dried mucus marks on his cheeks. His clothing varies across adaptations; in the original manga and 1966 anime, he wears a simple buttoned shirt and pants, while his more iconic look from the 1988 anime is a pair of green overalls with a baby chick pattern printed on the front.
In his original appearances as a child, Hatabō is simple-minded, naive, and often oblivious to his surroundings. His innocence and lack of direction frequently make him an easy target for bullies, including the Matsuno sextuplets and the oden vendor Chibita. Despite this, his character is not static; he can occasionally display surprising strength or a cunning, anti-heroic streak depending on the story's needs. This flexibility extended to his intelligence, which could vary from being depicted as sharper in some manga runs to returning to a more foolish, endearing personality in the 1980s anime. A consistent trait across all versions is his unique speech pattern, as he habitually ends his sentences with the verbal tic "da jo".
Within the narrative of Osomatsu-kun, Hatabō serves prominently as a source of comedic relief, with his role fluctuating between a minor character and a more pivotal player. His relationships are central to his interactions. He has a dynamic but often one-sided friendship with Chibita, who frequently dominates or fights with him, though their relationship can also shift toward mentorship or rivalry. The eccentric inventor Dekapan sometimes acts as a father figure to him, assisting him or guiding him in various episodes. Meanwhile, characters like Iyami frequently exploit his naivety for their own selfish schemes. Though less commonly seen, Hatabō has multiple family configurations, including parents who resemble older versions of himself and a younger sister who also bears a head flag.
The character undergoes a notable development in the later spin-off series, Osomatsu-san, which reimagines him as an adult who is the same age as the Matsuno brothers. In this iteration, he retains his childlike stature, attire, and mannerisms, even riding a child's tricycle. For a period, he inexplicably becomes a fabulously wealthy and successful businessman known as "Mr. Flag," but his complete lack of financial acumen and business sense leads his employees to abandon him, causing him to lose his fortune. Despite this setback, or perhaps because of it, his core personality remains that of a kind but simple-minded individual with a persistent and poignant desire for friendship. Even in his wealthiest moments, a darker, more unsettling side is hinted at in some episodes, such as a story involving him selling "mystery meat" of a questionable and possibly grim origin.
