Description
Kenta Hirono is a junior high school student who serves as the protagonist of this story. He is characterized as a geeky and enthusiastic boy whose childhood was defined by a deep obsession with tokusatsu hero shows and anime. This passion has shaped his identity to such an extent that he considers himself a Hero of Justice and is frequently seen running around his school and neighborhood in a makeshift, self-designed costume called Wing Man. While most of his classmates dismiss him as a crazy otaku, his childhood friend Miku Ogawa recognizes a noble spirit within him.
Kenta’s core motivation stems from a sincere desire to emulate the heroes he idolizes. His sense of duty is activated when a mysterious and beautiful girl named Yume Aoi literally falls from the sky into his life. True to his self-appointed role, he takes her home to recover, an act that sets the entire narrative in motion. His personality is a blend of earnest idealism and the awkwardness typical of a teenage boy. He is brave and willing to fight for justice, but he is also initially bewildered by the extraordinary events that unfold.
His role in the story is solidified when he unknowingly draws his Wing Man designs into Aois Dream Note, a powerful artifact that can bring anything written or drawn within its pages to life. By doing so, he becomes mystically linked to the book and discovers that he can physically transform into his own creation, gaining real superpowers. This event forces him to join forces with Aoi, the princess of the dreamscape world of Botoreem, whose domain has been conquered by the power-hungry despot Rimeru. Kenta becomes the primary defender of the Dream Note, taking on the responsibility of using his newfound abilities to help Aoi free her people and save her father from Rimeru and his monstrous Seed Men.
Kenta maintains several key relationships that influence his journey. His bond with Miku is foundational; she is a childhood friend who believes in him despite his eccentricities, and he inadvertently pulls her into his dangerous quest. His relationship with Aoi is more complex, beginning with her as a mysterious charge and evolving into a partnership of mutual reliance, as she is both his guide to the dream world and a source of motivation. Furthermore, he faces antagonistic figures, most notably Kitakura, one of Rimerus henchmen who goes as far as infiltrating Kenta's school as a teacher to try and steal the Dream Note.
Throughout the series, Kenta undergoes significant development. He is not an overpowered hero from the start; rather, his journey is a road from zero to hero. While the Dream Note allows him to invent powers for Wingman, he initially lacks the strength, stamina, and skill to use them effectively. Consequently, he is forced to train hard, using unconventional methods to build up his body. For example, he takes up rhythmic gymnastics to improve his balance, coordination, and dexterity, often training with female friends from the school team. This dedication shows that his transformation into a true hero requires not just magical power, but physical and mental discipline.
In terms of abilities, Kenta’s primary power is the capacity to transform into Wingman, a hero of his own design. Because he draws his ideas into the Dream Note, he can theoretically create new powers, weapons, or equipment by sketching them into the book. This makes his abilities versatile and directly tied to his imagination and creativity as a tokusatsu fan. However, as a result of his training, he also incorporates real-world techniques into his fighting style, using moves derived from rhythmic gymnastics in battle to enhance his agility and combat effectiveness.
