TV-Series
Description
Professor Kanabō, known in Japanese as Kanabō Hakase, is a supporting character in the anime Kenyū Densetsu Yaiba. He is a genius scientist and inventor who serves as the leading technical mind of the antagonist Onimaru Takeshi and his forces.

In terms of background, Professor Kanabō was living in Tsukuba when the demon warrior Kumo-Otoko approached him with a request to repair the Wind God Sword, the demonic blade used by Onimaru. He accepted the commission, and this work brought him into Onimaru's organization, where he became the chief scientist responsible for developing weapons and machines. He is presented as a somewhat mad scientist who handles weapon development for Onimaru, and some descriptions identify him as a scientist around a century old. His inventions include the Onimaru Cannon, machinery that strengthens Onimaru's castle, and a device capable of restoring the blade of the Wind God Sword after it was cut in half by the Thunder God Sword wielded by the protagonist Yaiba. His appearance is distinctive: the top of his head is completely bald, and he wears dark glasses over his right eye, giving him a studious but slightly sinister laboratory look.

As for personality, Professor Kanabō is eccentric and self-important, describing himself as a quite excellent doctor. He is loyal to Onimaru and acts as a quirky but dependable advisor. At the same time, he is an ambitious scientist with a strong fascination for destructive weapons and for combining science with dark supernatural forces. He shows little concern for the lives of other beings when pursuing his work and is willing to go to considerable lengths to carry out experiments that interest him. His brilliance is often undercut by comic mishaps, and he is not immune to Onimaru's temper when his inventions fail to perform.

His motivations center on scientific curiosity and the desire to prove his genius. Working for Onimaru gives him the opportunity to study legendary demon swords and to build large-scale weapons, fortresses, and machines that would be impossible to create through ordinary means. He is genuinely drawn to the exotic and supernatural elements of the conflict, such as the power of the wind and thunder god orbs.

In the story, Professor Kanabō serves as Onimaru's resident scientist and strategist, devising plans to defeat Yaiba and equipping the enemy side with advanced hardware. He is a recurring supporting antagonist rather than a frontline fighter. Across the series his inventions escalate in scale: after repairing the Wind God Sword and fortifying Onimaru's stronghold, he later constructs a special flying submarine used to infiltrate the hideout of the lunar invader Kaguya, and ultimately builds the Wind and Thunder Gods' Bazooka, a giant cannon that harnesses the combined power of the wind and thunder god orbs.

His key relationship is with Onimaru Takeshi, for whom he acts as head scientist, weapons designer, and advisor. He was recruited by Kumo-Otoko, the intellectual member of Onimaru's forces, and the two share a technical working partnership. His engineering is directed against Yaiba and his allies, making him the indirect source of many threats they face. In the later Kaguya arc, he continues to support Onimaru's side by building machinery used in the struggle against the Moon-based antagonist.

Professor Kanabō does not undergo a major personal transformation over the course of the series. His development is shown mainly through the evolution of his work: he moves from repairing a damaged demon blade and reinforcing a castle to producing increasingly ambitious machines, culminating in a flying submarine and a cannon that merges the powers of two divine orbs. This steady escalation reflects the growing scale of the conflict around him.

His notable abilities lie entirely in his intellect and technical skill rather than combat. He can repair legendary cursed swords, design and build fortified structures and artillery, construct aircraft such as a flying submarine, and create devices that integrate magical orbs with technology. As a strategist, he also contributes to planning against the heroes, making him a persistent behind-the-scenes presence despite lacking physical prowess.
