Description
Kan-chan, whose full name is Kanichi Yodayama, is the original protagonist from the classic anime series. He is an ordinary young boy, typically depicted as a second-grader living in a standard Japanese home with his father, who works as an office clerk, and his mother, a homemaker. His life takes a fantastical turn when he discovers an old, magical bottle in his attic.

In terms of personality, Kan-chan is characterized by a gentle and kind-hearted nature, but he is also notably timid and plagued by a consistent streak of bad luck. He struggles academically, often failing his school tests, which adds to his everyday troubles. Despite his shyness, he harbors a significant crush on his female classmate, Yuriko, though his timidity consistently prevents him from expressing his true feelings towards her. This shyness is a core part of his character, influencing many of his actions and desires.

His primary motivation often revolves around using the magic of the genies to solve his immediate problems, whether it is to improve his luck at school, find a way to impress Yuriko, or deal with local bullies, such as a troublesome bulldog named Bullko and a neighborhood tyrant named Gejigon. To summon the genie Hakushon Daimaō, he frequently carries pepper or koyori (string) with him to intentionally trigger a sneeze. He also learns that a yawn will summon the genie's daughter, Akubi.

Kan-chan's role in the story is that of the human anchor. As the owner of the bottle, he is the primary summoner of the genies, and his desires and misfortunes are the catalysts for each episode's adventure. Initially, he keeps the existence of the genies a secret from his parents, but over time, the magical beings become an accepted, if chaotic, part of the family household. His journey is not about gaining power or going on a grand quest, but about managing the often ridiculous and troublesome consequences of having clumsy and mischievous genies grant his wishes.

His key relationships are defined by his connection to the genie family. With Hakushon Daimaō, he forms a bond that evolves from a secret master-servant relationship into a familial one, with the genie often acting as a clumsy but caring protector. His dynamic with Akubi is more complicated due to her love of mischief and her occasional jealousy regarding Kan-chan's attention to Yuriko. Outside of the bottle, his relationship with his classmate Yuriko represents an unfulfilled romantic aspiration, while his interactions with the bullying dog Bullko range from adversarial to a surprisingly loyal, albeit reluctant, friendship.

Kan-chan experiences subtle but significant development over the course of the series. While he begins as a boy who relies entirely on the genies to fix his problems, he eventually demonstrates occasional sparks of courage, especially when standing up against those who try to abuse the genies' magic for selfish or evil purposes. The most profound moment of his development comes at the series' end, when a cosmic rule, the "Law of the Bottle," dictates that during a lunar eclipse, the genies must return to their bottle and go into a 100-year hibernation on the moon. Despite his and his friends' desperate attempts to prevent this, he ultimately must accept the tearful and inevitable farewell, a moment that signifies his loss of childhood magic and innocence.

In terms of notable abilities, Kan-chan himself possesses no magical powers. His only notable skill is his resourcefulness in using the bottle, specifically his method of carrying pepper to force a sneeze and summon Hakushon when needed. Decades later, in the sequel series Hakushon Daimaō 2020, an elderly Kan-chan appears as the grandfather of the new protagonist, Kantarō Yodayama. In his old age, he serves as a source of wisdom, using his past experiences—particularly his regret over his youthful shyness regarding Yuriko—to advise his grandson on how to navigate his own relationships and adventures with the genies.
