Description
Dinosaur Devil King Gottesu, known in Japanese as Dinosaur Leader Gottesu, is the primary antagonist of the 1977 tokusatsu and anime hybrid series Kyōryū Daisensō Aizenborg. His background establishes him as a being of considerable power, originally arriving on Earth from the planet Gazariya. While the initial leadership of the dinosaur forces is held by a figure named Ururu, it is soon revealed that Gottes is the true master planner behind the campaign to exterminate humanity and reclaim the Earth's surface for the dinosaurs. After watching Ururu fail a number of times, Gottes emerges from hiding, seizes control, and establishes himself as the cruel and ruthless ruler of the Dinosaur Empire.

In terms of personality, Gottes is defined by his arrogance and his absolute contempt for humanity. Unlike his predecessor, he shows no fear of the D-Force or its primary weapon, the giant cybernetic hero Aizenborg. He is a warrior at heart, possessing a deep pride that compels him to frequently challenge Aizenborg to direct combat, particularly favoring sword fights. While initially portrayed as purely sinister, his character develops a more complex dynamic following the arrival of his wife, the Witch Zobina. With her introduction, his demeanor occasionally shifts, taking on a more comedic tone as the couple bickers, though this is a stark contrast to his savage cruelty towards his own subordinates, whom he is known to discipline with a whip for any sign of disobedience. This lighter side fades away in the final episodes, especially after Zobina is killed in battle, at which point he reverts to a truly malevolent and cold-hearted villain.

Gottes’s motivations are straightforward yet commanding. He seeks total dominion over the Earth, driven to wipe out humankind and establish an era of dinosaur supremacy. He is a tactical genius, utilizing his vast intellect to create inventions and devise elaborate schemes to defeat humanity. His role in the story is to serve as the ultimate obstacle for the protagonists, Ai and Zen Tachibana. As the supreme commander of the Dinosaur Army, he is directly responsible for unleashing a relentless wave of monsters upon the world, including the deployment of six massive Magmadon creatures to attack multiple continents simultaneously. He represents the escalating threat that forces the heroes to push their abilities to their limits.

Key relationships define much of his narrative arc. His most significant alliance is with Zobina, who joins him in his conquest. He shares his laboratory and his secrets with her, explaining his methods for creating monsters, known as Chōju. This relationship humanizes him to a degree, making his eventual loss of her a turning point. His relationship with his minions is one of fear and domination; he rules through terror, demanding absolute loyalty and punishing failure without mercy. His primary adversarial relationship is with Aizenborg, whom he sees as a worthy rival. He engages the hero directly in sword fights and views their conflict as a personal battle, a stark contrast to previous villains who relied solely on monster attacks.

Regarding development, Gottes undergoes a noticeable shift as the series progresses. He begins as a hidden mastermind, steps into the role of a terrifying tyrant, and then enters a period where his interactions with Zobina add a layer of imperial domesticity, sometimes undercutting his menace. However, the narrative arc comes full circle, stripping away that veneer and returning him to a state of pure, unadulterated evil following personal tragedy. His final confrontation with Aizenborg is a brutal and decisive duel, where the hero ultimately defeats him with a mighty blade, bringing his reign of terror to an end.

Notable abilities make Gottes a formidable physical threat. He possesses the power to change his size at will, allowing him to shift from a human-scale stature to a towering fifty meters tall to battle Aizenborg on even footing. He is a master swordsman, wielding a blade that can also fire a variety of destructive beams. His eyes can fire laser blasts with the force of missiles, and he uses a whip both as a weapon and as a tool for controlling his dinosaur army. Enhancing his durability in battle are four regeneration capsules located on his chest, which allow him to recover from injuries he sustains during combat. These abilities, combined with his brilliant if twisted intellect, solidify his status as a nearly unstoppable force of nature in his world.
