Description
Leader Lārela of Lar Metal, also referred to as the Holy Queen, is the absolute ruler of the planet Lar Metal in the 1982 anime film Queen Millennia. She appears as a small, seemingly childlike humanoid figure with a glowing body and eyes, accompanied by energy halos surrounding her head and feet, an appearance that contrasts with her immense authority and cold, calculating demeanor. Her background is rooted in the ancient civilization of Lar Metal, a subterranean humanoid species that inhabits the icy planet. As the supreme monarch, she orchestrates the planet's millennial approach toward Earth, which in this cycle poses a catastrophic threat to both worlds. Lārela's primary motivation is the expansion and survival of her species: she plans to abduct a large number of humans before Earth is destroyed, intending to enslave them for Lar Metal's benefit. To achieve this, she deploys operatives on Earth, most notably the Millennial Queens — women sent to secretly guide and control human civilization over the centuries. In the story, Lārela serves as the central antagonist, standing in direct opposition to the film's protagonist, Yukino Yayoi (the current Millennial Queen, also known as La Andromeda Promethium), and her allies who seek to protect Earth. Her relationship with Yayoi is one of command and rebellion, as Yayoi begins to question and ultimately defy Lārela's orders after forming bonds with Earth's people. Lārela also has a daughter, Selen, who becomes another figure caught between loyalty to her mother and her own conscience. Throughout the film, Lārela remains an enigmatic and distant figure, showing no personal growth or change; her role is that of an unchanging, tyrannical authority whose plans drive the conflict. Her notable abilities are not displayed in direct combat but rather in her absolute control over Lar Metal's advanced technology, including its fleet of organic-looking spacecraft and the strategic manipulation of the planet's orbit. She embodies the cold, impersonal machinery of a civilization willing to sacrifice another world for its own ends.
