TV-Series
Description
Rai Utsumi appears in the anime The Brave Command Dagwon as a character who joins the main group fairly late in the television series, becoming the seventh member of the Dagwon team. He is a first-year student at Sankai High School, where he is placed in the same class as Ryu Hashiba, and he is also an alien from the planet Jinrai working as a rookie detective in the Space Police Organization. Official character details give him a birthday of March 18, blood type A, a height of 172 centimeters, a liking for omurice and milk, and a dislike of mushrooms.
As the thunder warrior of the team, Rai transforms into Thunder Rai by using his DagCommander and wearing the DagTector battle suit. For larger-scale combat he performs a fusion combination with his personal Thunder Bike to become DagThunder, and he can then carry out a thunderous combination with the space shuttle-style support craft Thunder Shuttle to take the form of Thunder Dagwon. Like the robot of En Daidouji, Thunder Dagwon is a standalone mecha and does not combine with the machines of the other members. In his transformed state Rai can also rearrange his body into an eagle-like configuration called Thunder Bird Mode, which lets him fly in a manner similar to Fire En's Fire Bird Mode.
In terms of personality, Rai is earnest and modest, carrying himself like a diligent young officer who is still learning his duties. His striking good looks attract the attention of nearly every female student at the school, and he becomes easily embarrassed and flustered by this unwanted attention, which he clearly dislikes. His sense of responsibility as a space police officer is central to his motivation; he takes the assignment to protect Earth seriously and wants to prove himself worthy of working alongside the other Dagwon members.
Within the story, Rai is sent from the Space Police Organization as a newly appointed detective assigned to support the Earth-based team. His transfer into Sankai High as Ryu's classmate helps him settle into the group's ordinary school life as well as their battles, and his connection with Ryu is one of his closest ties among the others. Because he comes from outside Earth and joins a team made up mostly of local students, his presence broadens the group's reach beyond the planet and provides additional support during the escalating conflict with the forces of Sargasso.
His development continues in the original video animation sequel The Boy with Crystal Eyes, in which Rai returns to Earth while pursuing the alien Deand Zol, a creature that has taken the form of a boy named Kenta. Believing he can resolve the situation on his own, he keeps the mission a secret from En and the other Dagwon members and attempts to handle it independently, but his plan backfires and leads to a direct confrontation with the Earth team. Through this experience he learns the limits of acting alone and comes to understand the value of cooperating with his comrades.
In combat, Rai relies on thunder and lightning-based attacks, and his combination with Thunder Shuttle gives him a powerful humanoid robot form capable of fighting alongside the larger Dagwon mecha. His abilities, together with his earnest personality and his growth from an inexperienced rookie into a dependable partner, make him a distinct and valuable addition to the team.
