Description
Maria Tobe is the main heroine of the anime The Brave Command Dagwon. She is a student at Sankai High School and the founder and sole member of the school's Paranormal Research Society, an interest that earns her the nickname "Occult Girl." Her appearance is youthful and somewhat innocent, with short brown hair and brown eyes, but her personality is notably fierce and assertive. She does not tolerate harassment and is known to physically confront men who bother her, displaying a strong-willed and combative side that contrasts with her delicate looks.
Maria is driven by a deep curiosity about aliens, the supernatural, and unexplained phenomena. This fascination puts her in the middle of many of the strange events that occur in the series, though for much of the story she remains unaware that her closest friends are the very heroes—the Dagwon team—who protect Earth from the Sargasso space criminals. Her investigations often lead her into danger, and she inadvertently witnesses battles while trying to uncover paranormal activity. In this way, she serves as the human perspective of the series, representing the ordinary people the Dagwon are sworn to defend.
Her most significant relationship is with En Daidouji, the hot-headed leader of the Dagwon team. Maria and En are childhood friends, and their bond is close enough that their interactions sometimes hint at a deeper romantic tension, although it remains a complex friendship. She is also frequently the target of flirtatious advances from Shin Sawamura, another member of the team, which she typically rebuffs with characteristic bluntness. Additionally, she has a younger brother named Gaku (birth name Manabu), an energetic boy who is an enthusiastic fan of the Dagwon and often tries to emulate their bravery.
Throughout the series, Maria's role evolves as she gradually becomes more involved with the Dagwon's activities, though she never gains combat abilities or a transformation. Her development lies in her growing awareness of the truth about her friends and her increasing willingness to assist them in non-combat ways, using her resourcefulness and knowledge of the occult to provide useful information. Her presence raises the emotional stakes for En and the others, as they must protect her while keeping their secret. Maria possesses no supernatural or mecha-based abilities, but her determination, sharp tongue, and investigative curiosity make her a memorable and active figure in the story, rather than a passive damsel. Her journey is one of discovering the hidden world around her and choosing to stand by her friends despite the risks.
