Description
Fire Diver serves as the leader of the Divers, a subgroup within the Brave Express Team that is dedicated to rescue operations. This robot transforms from a fire engine, and his design features a large ladder mounted on his back, which is used for rescue purposes during disasters such as fires or building collapses. In this fire engine mode, he can also carry the other members of the Divers to form a high-speed train known as the Rescue Express, which is modeled after the French TGV Sud-Est. As the leader, Fire Diver is depicted as a calm and composed individual, speaking in a polite and respectful manner, which reflects the team's focus on saving lives over aggressive combat. He is the primary component of the more powerful combined robot, Guard Diver, forming the majority of that mecha’s body, including the head, arms, and torso.
The Divers as a group are characterized by their cautious and gentle personalities, a direct contrast to the more combative and hot-blooded Bombers. Their primary mission is not to fight but to protect civilians, extinguish fires, and provide support during emergencies. Guard Diver, the combination of Fire Diver with Police Diver, Jet Diver, and Drill Diver, inherits this core philosophy. While capable of combat, Guard Diver is fundamentally a rescue unit. His manipulators are delicate enough to perform precise tasks, and his arsenal is designed with a dual purpose, emphasizing non-lethal options and support functions. For example, his primary shoulder-mounted weapons are high-pressure water cannons called Hydro Cannons, and his hand-held Diver Rifle is a multi-purpose tool suitable for both combat and rescue scenarios.
Fire Diver and the rest of the Divers first appear in the fourth episode, responding to a terrorist bombing and subsequent fire at a tower. Fire Diver works to extinguish the flames and rescue trapped people before the team combines into Guard Diver to assist Might Gaine in defeating the enemy robot. Throughout the series, Guard Diver consistently plays a supporting role, using his water cannons to cool down Might Gaine when he is overwhelmed by a swarm of metal-eating robotic mice and engaging in battles where his rescue capabilities are paramount, such as refilling a river to defeat a sea creature robot.
The most significant moment of development for the character occurs during the final battle against the Black Noir army. While protecting a young girl who could not escape, Guard Diver suffers critical damage, losing his right arm to enemy fire. After ensuring the girl's safe escape, he continues to fight despite his severe injuries. When his Diver Rifle is destroyed and his armor is shattered by enemy attacks, he still stands his ground with the girl's doll clutched in his hand, only to be finally pierced and completely destroyed in a crossfire. This act of self-sacrifice to save a single life is the ultimate fulfillment of his mission statement. In the series' epilogue, all members of the Divers are shown to have been rebuilt and restored, functioning once again as part of the Brave Express Team.
In terms of abilities, Fire Diver is armed with shoulder-mounted Fire Dischargers for spraying fire suppressant or water and chest-launched Fire Rocketter missiles. When combined as Guard Diver, these weapons become the Hydro Cannons, which have an effectively unlimited supply of water. Other notable equipment includes the Diver Rifle, formed from the weapons of the individual Divers, the shoulder-mounted Diver Detonator machine guns, the chest-mounted Diver Anchor, and the Diver Gimlet, a powerful flying kick utilizing the drill from Drill Diver on his right leg.
